The Drum Den and Guitar Bar in Hoboken can't be beat! I've heard mixed reviews (at best) about Metropolis Music.

Any suggestions on where an adult with no music training could start learning how to play an instrument. JC, Hoboken or Manhattan.

In DTJC, you have Metropolis on Newark Avenue. I have stopped a couple of times and they are very nice and welcoming. They keep a roster of instructors available for a variety of instruments.

In Hoboken, on Harrison St, just south of Observer Highway, there is a music lessons place called Tonal Art Music.

Both places have almost identical rates (around $30 per 30-minute lesson) and you are expected to keep a weekly appointment. I have been putting off my guitar lessons for a while, but I fully intend to sign up and start within a week, or so.

I would be interested to see what others suggest or recommend.
