5 arrested at Jersey City housing complex, 3 loaded guns seized: cops

Police said the sweeps occurred at the Booker T. Washington housing complex in Jersey City.

Jersey City police recovered three loaded weapons and arrested six men during high-visibility patrols conducted early Saturday morning, police said.

Around 1 a.m. on Saturday, police entered the Booker T. Washington housing complex in Jersey City and saw several men run away from them, police said.

One of the men, Ahmad Broadway, 18, of Belleville pulled a loaded .380-caliber handgun from his waistband and as he fled pointed it at an officer, police said. When the officer drew his weapon, Broadway tossed the gun, police said. He was arrested a short time later, police said.

A second man, Darion Hemmingway, 22, of Jersey City, also tossed away a gun, later found to be a 9-mm pistol loaded with 15 rounds, police said. Hemmingway was also seen discarding a large amount of heroin, police said.

The gun and heroin were recovered and Hemmingway was arrested, police said.

While arresting the two men, officers noticed a car surrounded by about a dozen men, police said.

Jaquan O'Neal, 18, of Jersey City, was seen by officers placing a loaded 9mm handgun in the back seat of the car, along with drugs, paraphernalia and $225, police said.

Also arrested in the sweep include Tyrell O'Neal, 21, and Darius Hemmingway, 18 of Jersey City and Christopher Gonzales, 31 of Newark. Police did not say if the two O'Neals or the Hemmingways are related.

Broadway is charged with various weapons offenses and aggravated assault on a police officer, police said. Darion Hemmingway and Jaquan O'Neal also face various weapons counts, police said. Darius Hemmingway and Tyrell O'Neal face drug charges, police said. Gonzales is charged with burglary and possession of burglar's tools.

"These are significant arrests as they removed both weapons and violent offenders from city streets," Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop said. "We will continue to target those areas that have been a source of concern or past problems to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone."
