... they should just bundle it into their advertising budget and be done with it

"Last year Colgate-Palmolive Co. posted a 19 percent gain in third-quarter earnings. Among the factors influencing this rise were reduced commodity and energy prices, internal cost cuts, and a weaker dollar for a company whose sales are 75 percent outside the United States. But, in response to American buyers tightening their belts by buying lower-priced brands and anticipation that foreign markets may soon follow suit, Colgate-Palmolive raised its product prices 6.5 percent and increased its advertising budget by 6 percent. This move may seem counterintuitive to, say, a dry cleaners owner, but it reflects one of the principles of marketing/advertising: During a recession, an increased percentage in advertising (even if it means raising prices to buffer the expense) will ultimately yield a higher volume of sales compared to a competitor spending less."

i cant see them taking it down, especially if theyve already invested $$ into it. im guessing colgate will pay up so as not to make a bad PR story worse. besides, the clock is iconic and thousands see it daily on their way to / from work, not to mention tourists on the hudson river boats. they should just bundle it into their advertising budget and be done with it

Jersey City sues toothpaste company over historic Colgate Clock

The historic Colgate Clock, seen last month at the foot of Essex Street in Jersey City, is now the subject of a lawsuit as the city tries to get maintenance costs.

Jersey City has taken the Colgate-Palmolive Co. to court, seeking more than $1 million it says it was promised in 2005 to maintain and operate the historic Colgate Clock on the waterfront, according to a report on Bloomberg.com.

The historic clock has told time on the Jersey City waterfront for some 85 years at the site where Colgate, which Bloomberg calls the world's biggest toothpaste producer, once owned a large plant.

The clock now sits at the foot of Essex Street, in the shadow of the Goldman Sachs Tower, where activists are hoping to create a park.

"Colgate made a clear-cut, direct promise in 2005 in a room full of Colgate representatives and city officials to pay $1 million to the city," Corporation Counsel William Matsikoudis told Bloomberg. "In reliance on that promise, the city has made expenditures but Colgate has failed to live up to its promise to pay."

Colgate spokeswoman Stephanie Clark told Bloomberg it doesn't comment on pending litigation.

The city sued in state court on April 16, and the company had the case transferred on April 29 to federal court in Newark, Bloomberg said.
