I paid a premium on mine because it's very quiet, an $80 8000 BTU probably sounded like a Mack truck hitting it's jake brakes going through your room.

Check Craigslist. There are tons of A/C units for less than $100. I sold two just in the past week.

Ah yes, and I too will post there eventually, but for $100 you don't get a brand new unit and definitely not 7800 btu.

I bought an 8000 BTU unit on CL for $80 last summer. I sold it this year for $65 (moving and no longer need it). It wasn't new, but worked great.

I'll sell you a new one, I bought it last year before I moved to JC but the new place has central air. I used it for about a month last summer.
It's a Friedrich 7,800 BTU with remote. It lists for $350 but is on sale for $300 I would sell it for $200.

Thanks Brewster. The unit is about 7 years old, which I'm sure is not as efficient as newer models.

Try the yellows, I used a local appliance repair guy to put a new compressor on a fridge, but it wasn't cheap ($400) and the fridge died again after his warranty ran out.

My guess is that unless this unit is pretty new, you're better off buying a new one. The service cost will likely be north of 50% new price, and you'll have a much more efficient unit. They've improved greatly in just the last few years. 11 EER is pretty common these days, if yours is older than 5 years it's likely 8 EER.

I searched the forums and did not find this topic covered here...

I need to have my window air conditioner cleaned recharged. Can anyone make a recommendation of a local business that performs this service...and the approximate cost (10K BTU unit)?
