since when does the number of beers on tap dictate whether something is or is not a real beer garden? Many of the "real" beer gardens in Prague have just one or two beers on tap. I don't think Bohemian Beer Hall even has 20 beers on tap.

Zum Schneider has only a handful from what I remember through the haze.

The Sand Bar has plenty of parking, making it much easier for out of towners to go there. There will be much less parking available near Zeppelin Hall. I know the light rail is right there, but I don't see the meatheads using the light rail to get their drink on. They love their cars.

"Douchebag" is all relative.

Let's just let the place open and give it a chance to settle before we start panicking.

LOL, take it easy on HobokenRefugee, he's coming from Hoboken where he witnessed decent pubs being destroyed for years. He has the right to be skeptical. After all, Sand Bar had huge potential and kind of flopped.

But I really, really, really don't see Zeppelin Hall becoming a douchebag kind of place. It's just not the kind of place that would be infested with any sort of douchebag. Although actually, it could become kind of an overbearingly yuppie place. But I predict it becomes a place where all types of people can converge and have fun. I'm actually really excited about it, and my boat will be docked only a few steps away baby!!

My only fear is that it will be empty, like some of JC's bars. This place is supposed to seat 500 people...will there be 500 people there on any given night?

"Eh, you might be right. Last time I was there was late 06."

Yeah, makes sense. That's about the time the attendance started to explode. They had to hire security guards on weekend nights to control access once the garden became filled to capacity.

Not that it matters, but the "secret was out" way before late '06, and it has been infested on the weekends with mostly drunk frat boys for at least the last five years.

"At Bohmeian Hall, the crowd is a tad on the older side (late 30's to late 50's)"

That hasn't been the case for years. Much younger crowd now that the"secret" is out. But still a decent place.

Could go either way with Zeppelin Hall, but I'm leaning toward it being a decent place too since most morons won't revisit a place where they can't appreciate the quality of the beer that's being offered.

As proof I offer the following converation that I overheard numerous times between various morons and the bartender at Zum Schneider which is located on LES of Manhattan:

Moron: "I'll take a Bud light"

Bartender: "Sorry, we only carry good beers."

Moron: "Huh?"

I agree with you that the Astoria beer garden has an enyoable atmosphere but it's hardly late 30's to 50's crowd.

More like late twenties/early thirties to mid 40's crowd at best.

They don't have a DJ, and I don't anticipate the Zepplein to have one either, unless they will be playing polka music.

I just don't see a DJ as part of a beer garden scene. It would be a bad business move. I think they are going after a different demographic. I just don't see a bunch of hood rats and guidos ordering Delirium and Duvel.

We can only wait and see.

This place will be a nightmarish problem for Liberty Harbor residents. Wait and see. For the same reasons Sand Bar is a problem for Downtown Jersey City in general. It's proximity to the Lightrail and the Sandbar for that matter will be it's downfall. Serving good beer will not discourage the idiots from coming there and with space for 500 people there obviously will be a noise problem with people coming and going at late hours. Who says they won't have DJs, I bet they will.

The idea of a beer garden is great. I have been to Bohemian Hall is Astoria, and found it a unique experience, but here is the difference between Bohemian Hall and the Zepplin.

At Bohmeian Hall, the crowd is a tad on the older side (late 30's to late 50's) and the atmosphere is an enjoyable experience. Now, does anyone think that that age group will be at Zepplin enjoying some beers?

I addressed the whole sound testing issue with the head of A1 property management and she told me they were doing "loud sound testing to see the threshold of when residents would complain". WTF? Yeah, that sounds like a traditional beer garden to me.

Factor in the younger crowd, the noise from the light rail, a DJ or two, and pissed off residents trying to get some sleep and you have a huge issue. I can only imagine how many times the cops will be called after some 25 year old douche nozzle grows a 12 pack set of balls and becomes a tough guy.

The people with the most to lose are the condo, town home, brownstone owners in the development. Really, who wants to buy a place in a neighborhood where a nuisance bar could be located.
I really hope this place is sane and fun, but my gut tells me it's going to suck and be a problem for the neighborhood.

It's basically at the end of Barrow (is that extension street called Barrow St still?) Behind the big building, right along the light rail, IIRC.

Plus, the place is located in Liberty Harbor, so it's obvious as to what demographic they are going for. I will remain cautiously optimistic.

I will say, that if this place is even half as good as my wildest imagination makes it out to be...I'll be spending a lot of time there, and much less time in NYC !

Outdoor beer garden looks ready to go. Wooden fence up, trees planted, and picnic benches already in place. Looks nice. Indoor restaurant looks like it has a ways to go though.
