I feel confident that everyone involved is fully aware that it is a cover-up. My question is are there going to be consequences as a result of the conditions and the closedown of the facilities and/or what's to happen to Mr. Carbajales? Will he go on as if nothing happened and carry-on in a profession he clearly has no business in...

SPCA shelter ransacked and flooded

The animal shelter of the Hudson County District Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was ransacked over the weekend and flooded after copper piping was ripped out, according to police reports.

An officer patrolling Johnston Avenue at 9:40 a.m. Monday saw water gushing out the front door, police said. He had the Jersey City Fire Department shut the water off, but the main building sustained "excessive water damage," reports said.

HCSPCA President Hector Carbajales said yesterday that adoption records and financial papers were ripped up and stolen, as well. He said cages and other supplies were taken in another break-in last month.

The HCSPCA has been in court several times recently to address allegations of filthy conditions found in city and state inspections.

The building is up for sale, since the HCSPCA will no longer maintain an animal shelter, Carbajales said.

He added that the organization will still do animal control for Union City and North Bergen, and is in talks with other shelters outside Hudson to accept those animals.

SPCA not ASPCA. The ASPCA is an organization in NYC, very different from the SPCA.

The president of an under-fire Jersey City animal shelter accidentally shot himself in the foot in his Union City apartment last Thursday, according to police reports.

Hector Carbajales, president of the Hudson County District Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, heard a noise from the roof of his New York Avenue building shortly after midnight and loaded a .357 Magnum "for his protection," police said.

As he pulled back the hammer, he dropped the handgun, causing it to fire a bullet into his right big toe, reports said. Carbajales was treated at the Jersey City Medical Center and released.

Union City Police Chief Charles Everett said seven legally registered guns were taken from the apartment and are being held at police headquarters "for safekeeping."

Carbajales has said that his family has been hectored by animal activists since reports surfaced of filthy conditions at the HCSPCA. He could not be reached yesterday for comment.
