I happened not to be home during the power outage. I just ran my washer and it doesn't spin. I wonder if it is more than a coincidence... Anyone has had problem with their appliance after the power surge?

I didn't imply that they should put it off. My point was that they are working through the night to do the repairs. Yes the jackhammer sucks, and I am pretty damn well sure you would think so too if it were right outside your window jolting you awake at 4 a.m. But it's necessary and I was hoping the work will be effective.

I'm glad nothing bothers you both, rbny and ianmac. I hope to one day achieve your level of Zen.

There is a very large hole surrounded by PSE&G trucks on the corner of Grove & Bay. It appeared overnight and the road is now closed. And they were definitely drilling it at 4 a.m.

So do you want to fill me in, please?

I think rbnyfan was wondering if you seriously thought PSE&G should put off necessary repairs til an hour that's more convenient for you.

Normally I would think the correct response to this type of post is "go back to the suburbs." But given how civilized society breaks down without electricity in a July heat wave regardless of whether its in a city or a suburb, I think the correct response is "go back to 1890."

I refuse to believe this is a serious post.

I think every numbered street downtown has PSEG trucks on them, and 2nd and Grove is closed for construction.

It seems to me the real problem here is that PSEG hasn't bothered expanding electrical services to match demand over the last decade of growth. Has there been any discussion of restitution or are customers entitled to any credits on their bills? Its not like a tornado knocked out power lines; PSEG just hasn't maintained their infrastructure.

The call uses published numbers in J City, I think. If it?s an email/txt you have to sign up for it.. The city site is down so I can?t look for it. Once its back up, I?ll get back to you.

Pretty amazing considering your machine was blown to smithereens just 2 hours ago. Glad it's back on though.

it was pretty weird...i have everything stored on a secondary hard drive but i was working on a spreadsheet when the surge happened....thankfully excel saved what i was doing! the computer wouldn't power back on so i thought maybe the motherboard had blown but after leaving it unplugged for a few minutes i got it to power back on after resetting all of my power strips/surge protectors. i guess that's the plus to having a home built computer, i can just swap out parts and get it kicking again if it does blow it up.

my netbook is like a little tank. it got dropped at least twice at the airport and still powers on and loads fast, so in the event my desktop crashes i at least have that as a backup.

What brand computer do you have ? Sounda like a work horse that keeps on ticking.

No more rolling blackouts for Jersey City -- at this time, says PSE&G

Published: Friday, July 22, 2011, 8:30 PM Updated: Friday, July 22, 2011, 8:43 PM

By The Jersey Journal

PSE&G has ended its rolling blackouts in Jersey City.

""No additional load shedding is planned at this time," said Richard Dwyer for the public utility.

He did say there was a downed power line at First Street and Jersey Avenue and crews are expected to repair it shortly.

The Jersey City Office of Emergency Management was still issuing robo-call warnings of the possibility of more blackouts that could extend into other areas of the city, but those calls are expected to end since they are based on PSE&G reports.

PSE&G has been conducting rolling blackouts during the day's sweltering heat where temperatures have reached 104 but with heat indexes indicated that it felt more like 112. Electric service had been interrupted in about 30 square blocks Downtown affecting about 4,000 customers.

The reason for the planned outage was that one of the power lines serving a Morgan Street PSE&G station was approaching its "emergency" rating. The blackouts and others to come were necessary, "to preserve the integrity of the grid," utility company spokeswoman Karen Johnson had warned.

At about 2000 at First St and Jersey Ave one of the power lines blew off the pole as power was restored. I heard people went running as a shower of sparks came raining down and the power line came falling down. PSE&G said it would take 2 hours to restore the line. Anyone have power of Jersey Ave?

Look at the top of the power lines. They look like they have smoke or steam rising from them.

I got a automated phone message from JC saying there would be rolling brown outs downtown.
Newport had power all day but it may have been reduced by 10-15%.

PSEG says power should be back by 8:00. So much for the intentional one hour rolling blackout story.
