Stalin beat Hitler by sheer numbers of victims, Hitler beat Stalin by the depravity of his murders. That's why I wrote "arguably".
The presence of the sculpture at the waterfront is jarring, its shocking nature probably the sculptor's intent. Next to it is a memorial containing twisted 9/11 wreckage. We have a "atrocities row" on JC waterfront...

The bayonet symbolizes being "stabbed in the back" by Soviet secret service (NKVD). I think the sculpture is too literal, and really not very good. But, it was there first. It was there when there was no waterfront to speak of. So in that sense it should stay where it is. At least more folks will learn about Soviet atrocities, which arguably were worse than those of National Socialists.

As for the statue, if you know JC's history, The Paulus Hook
area Gammantown, was home to Polish, Russian, and Ukrainian people.

Thanks for the info, I went to Moe's yesterday and picked his brain. He told me basically what you told me, but that the bigger 15-20 pound stripers may not be out for a week or two.
We scoped out the area yesterday, there seem to be a lot of 'no fishing' signs along the waterfront until you get out to the tip of exchange place.

It was incredibly loud out there; a pretty lackluster car show had 50,000 watts of pop music on blast for an hour or two. Hopefully its not like that most weekends.

I have to say (back to the original content) that the fishermen on the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway who fish at the Hyatt pier are the biggest slobs the whole length of the HRWW. I bike there almost daily, and that location always has trash and crap littering the area. It's not like that at other spots that attract fishermen for some reason.

Size also matter, a 30 lb striper or 15 lb blue has been concentrating pollution for far longer than a small blue, a fluke or a porgy. Small blues taste better anyhow. Had fried Raritan Bay fluke for dinner last night, doesn't get better.

yes i avoid many types of fish - tilapia / farm raised / endangered over farmed / high mercury content such as tuna. So most time i just eat wild salmon / smelt, as the population is plenty and it doesn't impose a long term risk to you.

but i am not so sure about what you said regarding the hudson river around manhattan/jersey city. I know they stopped dumping toxic waste in there but have you seen the crap that's still in there? not to mention the high concentration of motor boats/ferries in a relatively small body of water.

Here's what the government has to say about it. I really dont think you should eat any fish caught in the water around where we are.

I asked rent-a-cop once who was guarding such an event; he said it is legal... you need a permit and a public area is not so public anymore. It becomes private, temporarily.

People under age 16 are exempt. Also, if you don't have it, you are probably not going to get in trouble, especially fishing from land, and especially in Jersey City which is a place that Game and Wildlife officials are not known to randomly roam around checking for that sort of thing.

The ship store across the Morris Canal at Liberty Landing Marina has some basic fishing stuff and there is also Moe's Tackle in JC Heights. For a bigger selection of stuff there is Capitol Bait and Tackle on 36th Street, really convenient to the 33rd St stop.

Not recommended eating for children and women who might become pregnant, but men and women who won't become pregnant can eat limited quantities of fish from the Hudson. (And, since the guidelines are designed to be conservative, exceeding them is probably not going to hurt anyone.)

I think it's great for people to want to eat what they catch, as it (hopefully) encourages them to support large-scale efforts to keep the river clean and to behave in small-scale ways that help (by, for example, not doing stupid things like throwing cigarette butts in the street).

i thought it's strictly catch and release, that noone is crazy enough to eat them.

A couple of the piers in Hoboken have troughs and sinks for the fishermen to use, so the blood n' guts effluvia isn't an issue. Would be nice if JC incorporated those into the popular fishing sites.

I run on the waterfront pier like many runners often and those wedding ceremonies are extremely annoying.

I dont mind if they take photos on the pier due to the nice view, but that's not the issue.

They actually have the entire ceremony on the pier with chairs and everything. And it is placed directly on the walkway, even have the audacity to put yellow tapes on both ends. So by the time you are close and realized the walkway is blocked there is no way to get down. Either have to duck under the tapes and run through their chairs or go all the way back to exit to the lower level.

It has happened 3 times already in the last few weeks outside the harborside plaza, i dont know who organized it.

But it cant be legal, the walkway is public space how can you put 50 chairs there and block it with yellow tape for hours? I am going to complain to the harborside management if this continues.

You know, you'd think if the webmaster was determined to consolidate threads vaguely related, he'd at least retitle them to something generic, like in this case: "FISHING", since the moved additions are clearly NOT about "FISHERMEN VERSUS OUTDOOR WEDDING PARTIES".

Right now is "snapper season", juvenile bluefish which are fun for kids to catch and tasty. I'm sure Moe will be happy to set you up with the standard "popper" casting rig. you can also bobber fish for them with bait like spearing or even raw chicken. Another good place to try is at the South end of Liberty by the picnic area, it has the shallow structure that bait like and the snappers follow.
