Sim's Metals at 1 Linden ave. in Jersey City. Look for the building with the blue roof. That is where the peddler scale is.

You drive on the scale to get weighed.

Drive into the yard and talk to one of the guys, pointing out what you have. He will fill out a rate sheet and tell you where to dump it.

Drive back on the scale, then go park.

Hand the man in the booth your drivers license and get cash.

Made over $400 in cast iron radiators and steel pipe a couple months back.

At least one has been out of business for two or three years now.

I got the name and number of a guy who drives around picking up scrap. He took an old water heater of mine.
I'm sending you his info via PM

Does anyone know if the places mentioned in this post are still around? I'm looking to get rid of some old cast iron pipes.

Thanks for the advice. I figure 30 lbs of steel is worth about $4.00. Drinks are on me!

Yeah and they will pay you by the pound by type of metal - iron is the cheapest (broken same price as not)

drag that crap down to the end of Jersey Ave. You will find a scrap merchant just past the light rail crossing on your left of the dead end.

I have a small amount of steel (about 30 lbs.) that I'd hate to simply throw away. It's only worth a few dollars so I doubt I'd find a scrap dealer who could be bothered. Is there anyplace to take steel for recycling? What would happen if I just put it in the metal/glass/plastic recycling bin in my building?
