I believe it has something to do with fire regulations and property insurance. Only electric grills are allowed in my building, and as far as I know barbecues are usually against the rules in high rise multi-family units ( although it is often ignored.)
It puzzles me too that charcoal grills are allowed. (Landlord preference?)

In my condo all grilling on balconies or decks is illegal unless 6 feet away from the building. Condo Board sez this is per JCFD regulations.
Best to call Fire Department to find out.

The premise that a propane grill is illegal but a charcoal one is ok is a little odd, don't you think? I can see the flame (charcoal/propane) vs. no flame (electric) issue as being possible...
Are they thinking of the explosive vs non-explosive? Are they even thinking?

I know a couple at one of the refurbished condo buildings near Hamilton Park. They had to get rid of their propane grill and ended up buying some large George Foreman electric type. They are on the 5th floor, concrete decks and iron railings. But there was definitely some sort of legal issue that caused them to ditch the propane.

A neighbor who moved in over the winter was told by his landlord that the city inspected the premesis and said the gas grill on the 2nd floor deck was illegal and must be removed. Apparently a charcoal grill would be okay.
Anyone have some knowledge about this? In my experience the city safety inspectors are bumblers who can't agree what their own codes actually mean. I do recall it's illegal to have a propane tank indoors, and many apartments have no outdoor path to the grill without passing through the house. But I don't think that's what this is based on.
