Yeah, not the greatest diner, but one of the few late night options and one of the few non-fast food options. i really hope they start throwing more decent food options into this hood.

also, hoping this isnt going to be the pharmacy with surface parking that was proposed there a couple years back. there are literally 3 pharmacies within 1/4 mile from that location.

To think of all of the power brokering and envelope passing that has happened at that place over the years. An institution in Hudson County politics.

R.I.P. VIP? Site of classic Jersey City diner sold

Today 3:59 PM (04/18/2019)
By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY — The Sip Avenue site that is home to the VIP Diner, the Journal Square eatery in business for over 45 years, has been sold.

Real estate firm Holliday Fenoglio Fowler announced the sale of 175 Sip Ave. on Thursday, making public a deal that has been rumored for months. The property is a roughly half-acre lot at Sip Avenue and Kennedy Boulevard, making it prized land for a real estate developer. The Journal Square PATH station and transit hub is a short walk away.

It wasn't the best - but it was always my true-blue, late night spot. My kids and I have a lot of memories there. I'm sad.

The guy who owns Hooked bought the Journal SQ Pub next to the theater. He said he will be serving food there in a month. I saw the menu and its very cool.

Here's another one to add to the list....

Google: PANYNJ Journal Square Transportation Center Jollibee lease

Never understood why more businesses didn't take advantage of the 26,000 commuters who use the JSquare Transportation Center every day. The Transportation Center has had large foot traffic since it opened in the 70's.

Also, a Nathans/Arthur Treachers sign recently went up inside the JSQ Path station, where the old bagel place was years ago.

Bidding was open to everyone and their mother. I agree the property is probably worth more, but other developers have got to do their due diligence and submit bids. I saw this RFP on JCRA's website for over a couple months. Not like it was a secret.

Residential projects near Journal Square given planning OK

Updated 3:26 PM; Posted 3:26 PM
By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY — Two high-rises slated for the same block near Journal Square were approved by the Jersey City Planning Board Tuesday night over the objections of a group of neighbors who say they fear increased traffic and parking problems.

The projects — 32 Oakland Ave. and 345 Baldwin Ave. — will include a total of 413 units and 202 parking spaces. They will sit on either end of a block that runs along Washburn Street, about a quarter-mile east of the Journal Square PATH transit hub.

(saw this on Mayor Fulop’s twitter. the properties mentioned are the big parking lots on Newark Avenue up by 5 Corners. It looks like the projects will span from Newark Avenue to Cottage Street. Look at the Dream Hotel Group website within the piece they have some interesting hotels all over)

25-story, mixed-use project is coming to Journal Square

Tower will feature 110 hotel rooms, more than 200 residential units and 6,200 square feet of retail

Jersey City | Aug 22, 2018 at 1:00 pm

A 25-story, mixed-use facility that will serve as the anchor of a major redevelopment project in Journal Square is coming to Jersey City, the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency announced Wednesday.

The proposed project will include 110 hotel rooms, more than 200 residential units, 6,200 square feet of ground floor retail, a day care center, fitness center and 120 reserved and unreserved parking spaces.

The five-parcel lot, which sits on Newark Avenue and Cottage Avenue in Journal Square and had been previously transferred to the JCRA, will be purchased by Canbis LLC, for $8.7 million.

PJ Ryans in JSQ is busy at happy hour and weeknights, but pretty dead for lunch and weekend brunch.

I heard their next location to open will be in Newark by the Prudential Center.

damn, hope not. i actually liked that place, especially during NFL season.

I heard that the downtown PJ Ryan's is closing but the JSQ one is staying and potentially a new one opening somewhere else on the west side of city.

That would be a shame, and a surprise. I haven't been there in a while, but the last time I stopped in, they were busy. I have always liked that place. Good bar food, and (usually) really good draft beer selection. I haven't visited the JSQ location (way too far for me) but I have heard it is actually really good.

i agree 150% that a museum in journal square is not the brightest idea. i think along the waterfront or near liberty science center makes more sense as it might be able to leverage off the foot traffic downtown/tourist, the mall or liberty science centerQuote:

Jersey City council OKs $10M deal for new museum

Updated 4:51 PM; Posted 4:17 PM (1/23/2018)

By Terrence T. McDonald tmcdonald@jjournal.com

The Jersey Journal

JERSEY CITY -- A plan to turn a county building into a city-run museum and community center advanced last night when the City Council approved a deal to borrow $10 million to buy the building and hire a consultant to help create it.

The council voted 7-2 to approve the measure, a subsidy agreement between the city and the autonomous Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, which is overseeing the museum project. The deal puts the city on the hook for the $10 million the JCRA is bonding for the museum.

I wonder when some interesting retail & restaurants will come to the blocks right around JSQ. The cynical side of me says "never" and the block from the PATH station to Tonnelle will always be exactly as it is now. The glass half full version of me says "be patient, it will happen."

Ethnic ain't interesting ?

You want shit for white ppl ?

Eh, i get it. Have you ever actually tried to eat in JSQ? Besides a few good Indian joints on Newark, there really isnt much thats good OR interesting. It has nothing to do with ethnic. Its honestly just nothing you would want to venture out for with a date, or friends.

But to answer the previous question, yes I do think some good options will start to trickle in soon

Golden Crust - Jamaican food (ain't so Irie but jerk not bad)

Morgan Seafood - Egyptian Food (sit down possible but rustic for
Ohio BKLYN transplants who know fuk all)

Tonelle Ave - 2x Comidas Equador

3 Guys from Italy - Old School Slices

Noodle fan - cheaper Thai food

Yes tons of Masla Dosa and Sweet Lasi
