To be fair I look forward to dancing and tearing it up on some of the graves here. Party Time!

Astonishing, the sense of entitlement.

I tried that! Showed up at 8 am on a Sunday. I was amazed to see that the caretaker was almost too drunk to stand. After a futile couple of minutes trying to communicate with him he started screaming at me about Fulop. But thanks. I hope he gets the help he needs.

you no absolutely nothing, did you know that without the fundraising done, the vets that take care of the cemetery would be homeless as the roof of the house was destroyed in hurricane Sandy?

I wonder if the people complaining about how this space is maintained have ever offered to lift a shovel to help out?
My guess is no.

This is sugar coating the situation over there quite a bit. She may be nominally in charge, but the man who is there 24/7 is someone who certainly has problems and needs help. It can feel downright dangerous in the cemetery if you visit alone and he's the only one there.

NFI. Anyone here ever actually been to Harsimus Cemetery? This is a historic burial ground, dating back to the 18th century, which has/had no money. It was created with some connection to Alexander Hamilton, and has a wall used as a picket line by Redcoats in the War of Independence. Despite that, I don't think it gets any city or state support and what the families paid to have loved ones buried there is probably long gone, not invested and certainly not being used to maintain or renovate the place. Probably dried up, stolen or siphoned off.
I think they get a little carried away with the Rocky Horror Picture shows and stuff, but what this group does to raise money is the difference between what you see now and a totally abandoned graveyard. I think it's easy for one person with relatives buried there to say this is disrespectful, but I don't see them doing anything to maintain the place. The woman who runs it (who has more than one family member buried there and is not a recently-moved-to-DTJC person) is the only one between a relatively clean, accessible site, and a boarded-up, overgrown blight on Newark Ave. They do a lot more than the events that were featured on ABC news (to get everyone exited and outraged). Most are very quiet (like the mushroom workshop I went to 2 years ago). I encourage everyone here to walk over there and take a look before typing out a knee-jerk reaction piece.

We have both now. I was appalled at the condition of the cemetery on a recent visit. Whoever is in charge of the cemetery is not spending the fundraising money on maintenance.

is it more disrespectful than an abandoned cemetery overgrown with weeds and infested with groundhogs burrowing into the burial sites?

It is disgraceful that they let these recently 'moved to DTJC' idiots party and drink on local families graves.
Really fucking disrespectful.

A historic cemetery up in Jersey City has been doing some fundraising by hosting parties and galas... at the cemetery itself.
Some families say this is simply disrespecting the dead. Videos and pictures from fundraisers at Jersey City and Harsimus Cemetery show them spilling over onto gravesites. These parties have live rock bands, blankets, and lawn chairs spread across graves, port-o-potties, and hot dog stands. http://6abc.com/community-events/ceme ... s-in-jersey-city/2648209/
