Many school districts put immigrant students behind in grades in order to learn the language. Several months ago, something similar happen when a 18 and 19 year old immigrants raped a 14 year old classmate. The officials said it is their practice to place older students with younger classmates who are immigrants.

there you go again blaming the immigrants

This is why the New Yorkers love Maplewood. It gives them that adrenaline rush reminding them of when they helped gentrify Brooklyn and Harlem.

They don't call it Maplehood for nothing-there was a triple drug related homicide this past January as well.

Unfortunately, he can also be 15 going on 16 before the year is over.

Definitely is possible. I remember once a year someone would come around the school in the spring to see how many students wanted to sign up for summer jobs program and you needed to be 14 by June. They would go class to class from the 6th grade and up and I can remember at least two students in my 6th grade class were old enough.

This topic made me look back at one of my old middle school class photos to figure out how many kids were left back at time the photo was taken. Of the kids I knew for a fact had been left back before I counted 8 in the 6th grade but the number might of been as high as 10 because two I can't be sure of. My class size was only about 25 or so. This was in Downtown also but during the 90s.

I doubt he was being ridiculed, being 15 he was probably the biggest kid in school, unless there are other winners that age or older. So I don't think it was for protection, especially since the gun didn't even have bullets.
Get these kids out of formal education and start vocational schools so they have a fighting chance to make a living.

Yeah richie is correct, this pupil was redshirted 2x. He is the equivalent of starting kindergarten at 7.

What a disservice to this child by placing him in a situation to be ridiculed by all the other students.

I wonder if the gun was brought in for show and tell or to defend himself.

Being left back once would not make sense to be 15, it would have to be at least 2. The real issue is that kids are having kids that are not being raised by a responsible adult. Cut welfare for people who only have kids. I'll find them a job.

What also strikes me as sad are the statements about the kid's age. If he repeated one school year, 15 would make since to be in middle school. The gun being in school is dangerous and frightening. Focus on the real issues.

A gun was found at School 4 in Downtown Jersey City Tuesday afternoon and a 15-year-old boy was arrested, Jersey City police said.

Jersey City spokeswoman Jennifer Morrill said the gun was not loaded when it was recovered at 2:20 p.m. at the Middle School 4 on Bright Street.

The boy, of Bright Street, was charged with unlawful possession of a handgun in an institution. Details on the incident, which remains under investigation, were not immediately available.

Maryann Dickar, spokeswoman for the school district, could not be reached for comment this morning. A woman who answered the phone at the school yesterday repeatedly hung up when asked about the incident.
