I have been there for almost 15 years and it has changed a lot. There are still some regular day drinkers and dealers, but I have never felt unsafe. Everyone keeps to themselves.
But for the new stroller crowd moving in: please don't come here wanting it to be the burbs!

Everyone is unique in what their "line in the sand" is for living. If you are able, definitely hang out in your new home area during the late afternoon and evening hours (weekday and weekend if you're able) to see if you could deal with what some would consider bothersome or potentially worrying. You need to understand you live in the city - and it's not New York City. (I say that nicely - just want you to be happy in your new home).

I live around the corner and walk my dog through that part every day. It has gotten much better. The drugs and stuff was an issue about 7-10 years ago. There are still some groups of locals who hang around that street but they don?t bother anyone and it?s completely safe. Lately it has been about the noise kids make when they play basketball late night which has for the most part stopped.
It?s not park slope Brooklyn but I have been there for 6 years and have never felt unsafe walking through that street late at night.

I am planning to move to Jersey City. I saw a place available in the Wayne Street, but then I came across this thread. It doesn't sound good.
Can anyone living there give an update on how the situation is now? Is it the same, or has it improved. Thanks.

As far as the drugs and drinking, it's up to the police and the community to be proactive and involved. Thirty years I've been here and it's the same issue for this one block.

Thank you, that was the article I was thinking of.
I'm not saying I want everyone to be kicked out, and I don't even care about a few joints and some open containers, but used needles where kids play is not OK. I don't even think some of the regular junkies live in the neighborhood...they just frequent good spots to shoot up.

Temporary chain-link fencing has been erected effectively shutting down Angel Ramos park on Wayne Street, and a portable toilet was also delivered.
These may be signs of upcoming renovations since the park is now closed to the public. This article from last year mentions that some site updates would be on the horizon. So maybe that's what's up. If anyone has any more details on what's coming, please share. Thanks!

Well, it's obvious that the best thing for Jersey City would be to kick these poor crazy people out of their homes and demolish these "problem buildings" so Kalen has a property to invest in.

That building on Jersey and 2nd used to be owned by Grace Church and they rent apartments to low income residents. They recently sold it for ~3 mil (dirt cheap, someone ripped them off imo). I know a couple of the residents, and one of them anyhow is a really great person. I hope they don't jack his rent up beyond his means.

There still seems to be a good quantity of "problem buildings" downtown. Parts of Wayne street certainly feel not in character with the rest of the neighborhood. Also, Jersey Ave south of Key Foods; you have beautifully restored buildings as you walk down Jersey ave from Newark to 2nd and then you hit this one building and its surrounded by sketchy people hanging out front and basically shouting at eachother or on their phones cursing and acting crazy. It drags down the block. Also, Montgomery street between Varick and Jersey has some shady buildings. Columbus west of Grove...you get it. Its a shame we have such great neighborhoods downtown that get spoiled by some horrible buildings and the people who live in them. I would not want to invest in a property that sits on the same block or across the street from some of these places.

Drug activity in the Wayne St. park has really gotten worst lately. I have been finding used needles in the park as well as on my stoop. I thought this was one of the parks that was supposed to get revamped last year when the city was handing out public space funds. Does anyone know any more about that?
Such a waste of park in a prime location. If I were a parent I would be really mad this parks only use is for kids to smoke pot after school or for older junkies to but drugs.

never move into an area that at one point was one of the worst of the city and expect everyone that was once there to leave.. look at it as part of the real jersey city experience.. don't expect every city with over 1/4 million people to be the perfect city with no crime or "different" crowds in it.. it will never happen
it also seems most people on JC List have lived very sheltered lives and have never seen half of what goes on in this city.. its part of life, accept it or move to north dakota.

Many people argue that basketball courts are great because it gives the kids between ages 13-29 something to do. Basketball occupies them and keeps them from pursuing other hobbies like robbing and shooting people. Perhaps the recent armed robberies were committed by "kids" who had grown tired and bored with basketball? Maybe they were just between games? By the way? If I don't get to play my music REALLY LOUD then I might just go nuts! So please, think carefully before you go knocking on my door.

As someone who lives in a rent-controlled apartment, kindly go f*&K yourself. I'm a law-abiding, tax-paying, voting citizen who'd probably be forced to live elsewhere than the place I live in now if it weren't for rent control and a landlord that is nice enough to not even raise my rent the maximum every year. I'll repeat myself for clarity's sake. F you, and while I'm at it, everyone even remotely related to you. http://30.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_llfe2kZbTd1qackwxo1_400.gif

Any building in Jersey City that is more than 4 units is supposed to be rent controlled. They are privately-owned and the city designates the maximum rent increase per year in those buildings. Sometimes, because a landlord can't legally raise the rent according to market value, he or she is forced to let repairs and upgrades go because they don't have the rental income to make the fixes. Good for grandfathered tenants. Not so good for landlords and neighborhoods.

There is certainly an element of ghetto-ness that exists on that block, on an otherwise really nice block. How does a building become rent-controlled? Are such buildings the property of the city? Pardon my ignorance on this subject.

I walk on that block every day and have never had a problem. There's a regular group that sits out there playing bingo or dominoes, while their little kids run around with a little chihuahua. Hardly intimidating!
However, there also are several guys who might be involved in drug dealing. You have to wonder when you see a car with fully-tinted windows double park, someone gets out for a quick stop with these guys, then drives off. But even these guys have seemed respectful and I have never had a problem. I've never witnessed any "intimidation tactics." It would be good to see at least occasional police presence at the park. It's very rare.
