Fulop celebrates plans to close power plant

Oct 05, 2016 |

JERSEY CITY – PSE&G has announced that it plans to close two aging power plants by 2017, one of which is located in Jersey City. The coal-powered PSEG Hudson Generating Station power plant in Jersey City was at one point considered one of the most polluting in the nation.

“We have worked with environmental groups over the last few years to advocate for the closing of the Jersey City station, which contributed to pollution and dangerous air quality for residents in Jersey City,” Mayor Steven Fulop said. “We commend PSE&G for this decision that will improve quality of life in Jersey City.” The other plant is in Mercer County.

So burning coal in a densely populated area is good. OK whatever you say.

I have experience with coal (worked for a company that built power plants). Clear back in the 1990s the technology was developed to burn coal cleanly. The circulating fluidized bed plants were burning coal with 92+% sulfur removal and NOx emissions that were below the natural background NOx levels. Ash was removed via electrostatic precipitators and bag houses (huge filters).

You could build 3,000+ MW of coal power around here and you would never notice it.

Anyone here remember seeing columns of smog near the Pulaski Skyway some years back? That wasn't from the coal plant. It was NOx from the gas turbine generators located in South Kearny. The NOx control system weren't installed until recently (they didn't work when they were first installed).

I doubt natural gas is going to stay that cheap forever. Right now, driller can't make money so they have pretty much stopped drilling new well.

On top of that, we started exporting natural gas. If oil prices go back above $60 per bbl, the natural gas to liquid fuel plants, who's construction were put on hold (low oil prices), will be built.

?Coal-fired power plants are disproportionately located in low-income communities and communities of color?

Seventy-eight percent of African Americans live within 30 miles of a coal-fired power plant, says new report by civil rights group

Top 3 Worst Offenders in the USA:
Crawford Gen. Station, Chicago, IL (Edison International)
Fisk Gen. Station, Chicago, IL (Edison International)
Hudson Gen. Station, Jersey City, NJ (PSEG)

The report, Coal Blooded: Putting Profits Before People, investigates the overall toxicity of emissions or ?dirtiness? of a coal plants, and combines emissions ratings with demographic data to rank a coal plant?s effect on neighboring communities.

Yeah great! Have you seen some of the problems with natural gas or do u just parrot what u hear from the left?]

Good point! You must also be aware that Hillary had the coal plant shut down. She wants to fuck up American one coal plant at a time!

The one in Hudson county hasn't burned much in the way of coal in quite a while. Its duel fuel and has been burning natural gas. It just isn't combined cycle, so it has a major cost disadvantage to PSE&G's other plants (i.e. Bergen Generating).

Note: With the dependency on gas, you are going to get more gas pipelines. The Northeast in particular has had major capacity issues to the point where gas would have had to been shutoff during cold spells to home to keep the power plants running.

PSE&G I think (not sure of this) has an application in for new nuke plants to replace Salem 1 & 2 (NJ has the highest % of power coming from nukes out of all the states). I think they are going to be the same design as the ones that Georgia Power is currently building... the Westinghouse/Toshiba AP1000.
