Being overly dependent on one type of fuel (natural gas) is going to make us really vulnerable to price shocks if the supply is interrupted.
I doubt natural gas is going to stay that cheap forever. Right now, driller can't make money so they have pretty much stopped drilling new well. On top of that, we started exporting natural gas. If oil prices go back above $60 per bbl, the natural gas to liquid fuel plants, who's construction were put on hold (low oil prices), will be built.

?Coal-fired power plants are disproportionately located in low-income communities and communities of color?
Seventy-eight percent of African Americans live within 30 miles of a coal-fired power plant, says new report by civil rights group Top 3 Worst Offenders in the USA: Crawford Gen. Station, Chicago, IL (Edison International) Fisk Gen. Station, Chicago, IL (Edison International) Hudson Gen. Station, Jersey City, NJ (PSEG) The report, Coal Blooded: Putting Profits Before People, investigates the overall toxicity of emissions or ?dirtiness? of a coal plants, and combines emissions ratings with demographic data to rank a coal plant?s effect on neighboring communities. http://www.earthisland.org/journal/in ... act_communities_of_color/

The one in Hudson county hasn't burned much in the way of coal in quite a while. Its duel fuel and has been burning natural gas. It just isn't combined cycle, so it has a major cost disadvantage to PSE&G's other plants (i.e. Bergen Generating).
Note: With the dependency on gas, you are going to get more gas pipelines. The Northeast in particular has had major capacity issues to the point where gas would have had to been shutoff during cold spells to home to keep the power plants running. PSE&G I think (not sure of this) has an application in for new nuke plants to replace Salem 1 & 2 (NJ has the highest % of power coming from nukes out of all the states). I think they are going to be the same design as the ones that Georgia Power is currently building... the Westinghouse/Toshiba AP1000.
