If you run south from newport along the waterfront to jersey avenue and liberty state park, then continue all the way south past the flags to the nature reserve and the end of the boardwalk in port liberte (by their swimming pool)... and back, it should be around 12-13 miles. The same distance from hamilton park and back, going around enos at the end is close to an half marathon. In the morning around 7:30 it is glorious, you meet the same people on the WE.

If you are looking at shorter distances, either doing loops in liberty state park, or cutting short there if coming from elsewhere are a good way to build mileage. I sense that someone might be priming for a 10k in may... The liberty half marathon in september is a classic too though I would recommend using salt caps if it is too warm and you are sweating a lot.

maybe OP should just run along the waterfront path instead of in the streets.

Anyone who is "hit by cars at least 6 times over a 2 month period." is clearly doing something wrong, and should stay safely inside at home.

I generally run at about 5:00 am on weekdays. During months when it's totally dark then I normally stick to DT and the waterfront area, but when there is some light I run other routes for hills, etc.

I often run on the street, left side facing traffic and close to the outer edge. Sidewalks around here can be very uneven, full of cracks and dark. It's also a bit easier to get a clear view of an intersection from the street. If the street is narrow and cars are coming I'll hop on the sidewalk.

My opinion is that it's generally pretty safe to run early but you have to exercise normal caution. Don't run in areas you're not familiar with or where there are no lights. Don't wear headphones (not even in broad daylight). Do wear reflective gear and carry lights if it's dark. Never assume a car is going to stop, signal, move out of your way, or do anything to avoid you. Just give every car or truck as wide a berth as you can.

I think you answered your own question, cars probably can't see you since most of them don't drive on the sidewalk.

I run on the side walk, using crosswalks. The area where I live has a lot of blind corners and asshole drivers don't stop at STOP signs. How is that question of my competence you troll?

If anyone is worried about safety, maybe you shouldn't be posting the time, route, and your gender on the internet.

Getting hit almost 6 times does raise some eyebrows about your awareness, however I will say that just this week I was almost hit by a driver on CC Dr. running a red light. So close that I was able to smack his car as I jumped out of his way. Drivers are insane.

Agree on the skunks in the park. It has gotten much worse in the last year or so. I have seen them in 4 different locations on one run but no close calls get sprayed (yet).

is there anything one can do when you see people speeding through residential neighborhoods?

I have been running to LSP early mornings (5:30) via the pedestrian bridge since 2005 and have never had an issue. There certainly are lots more people around at that hour then there used to be. I do run with a dog and don't wear headphones so that I pay attention to what is going on around me.

I have not had any close calls with cars.

This would be my concern as well. And, the same goes for the entrance into LSP. The STOP sign at the north entrance corner is regularly disregarded by drivers. I have had many close calls while running into the park because of drivers who are concerned with getting somewhere than obeying rules of the road, or traffic signs.

I run closer to 6:30 and it's safe and comfortable, and plenty of other runners are out. (dt, waterfront)

Give it a shot now while it's not as dark as it would be in the winter - you may find other runners as well which will make you feel infinitely safer.

Hi Everyone,

I am curious about your thoughts on the safety of running in DTJC early in the morning (5AM when it's still dark)?

Routes would likely take me around the DT area, to the waterfront, and also over the pedestrian bridge into Liberty State Park. I do these routes all the time in daylight, but never so early that it's still dark outside.

Thoughts? Anyone else out there at that ungodly hour?
