I went to Great Kills beach this weekend, An ocean beach playground and wildlife haven.. I had a blast and its only 25 min ride by car from home. After the beach I went to Trader Joe's which was 15 min from the beach.

Waze is pretty good at recommending local vs express. Wouldn't be surprised if other Wazers alerted you to when parking lots were full.

One little tip for the turnpike portion next time: nine times out of ten, you'll encounter less traffic by sticking to the "cars/trucks" lanes (outside lanes) instead of the "cars only" lanes.

Glad to hear it worked out well.

Good suggestion, and ditto for not taking the GSP 'express' lanes (although that doesn't apply to getting to Sandy Hook).

In case anyone is interested:

we left downtown about 8:45'ish today, and took the Turnpike then Garden State pkway down. Tons of cars all the way, but moving all the time though. Got there around 10:20. Only 2 of the parking lots were full at that time.

Great day for the beach.

Now we're all burnt!!!

Haha! You remembered!!! yeah, I did all the research and that, but then "chickened" out - was concerned that the trip coming back would be too much for me to handle

We're finally renting a car this weekend, so I figure it may be easier to go by car.

Sounds like the key is to leave as early as possible!!!

Thanks everyone!

Last time I was at Asbury Park ( night before Springsteen played a surprise 2 hr concert at the Wonder Bar ) on a Sunday there was no parking to be had by about 10:30 . Get there by 9:30 and park in the lot next to the unfinished building for the flat $10.00 fee . The meters only let you buy 3 hours at a time for $6.00 then you have to refill it.

If taking small children to the beach for a day trip consider Avon-by-the -Sea available free parking the jetty's shape creates a natural swimpool which is safe for kids and there are lots of services. BTW American Pharoah is running at Monmouth on Sunday post time is 5:50 they are expecting 60,000 could be the worst ride north this summer.

I was there that Sunday as well, it did get crowded after 11 am you might have a hassle. As for the meter fee, it is a buck an hour unlimited unless you park on Ocean Ave. which is $2.00 an hour. You can buy a $10 all day pass and even buy a beach ticket from the meter just show you receipt to the guy giving out the beach badges.

OR...do what we do: wait until 2 pm or so to leave for the beach. You'll sail down the parkway, and you still have 4-5 hours of a beautiful day on the beach (at less skin-cancerish hours).

Maybe not the best way to go with kids, though.

I was thinking the same thing: if you REALLY want to make it easy on yourself, and if you are set on driving there (which is what I would do, despite the warnings against it) I would strongly suggest to leave home no later than 10 so you can get there before 11. Maybe even leave as early as 9:30. I know it might be tough getting out early with the kids in tow, but you would be so happy and relaxed to get there early, find parking easily and not battle traffic/crowds.

I don't know when the parking lots fill up at Sandy Hook, but we usually leave around 7:30 or 8:00 and there is very little traffic. It's a breeze to get into the park and get parking.

Worth also considering some state parks with beaches like Round Valley, Spruce Run and Wawayanda. Easier drive than the shore -and if you get there before 11am generally no issue with parking. Bring a cooler, charcoal and whatever you'd like to bbq. You can get the beach, nature trails, fishing, boating and more all in one place...

With ease...kind of pushing it but I think you might be able to swing it. Ocean Grove just south of AP doesn't open their beach till noon on Sundays and street parking is free. So for a family day this just might be the ticket !

You will be chancing it on that Rt. 36, traffic build up is murder. And after sitting in it only to have to be turned away will make the trip for naught. Try Asbury Park, best kept secret, it's quick, cheap, and the available metered street parking is decent a well. Asbury gets better and better each year, more and more people are coming back. A small boardwalk with many restaurants, and food vendors. I think you will like the option.

We're planning to go to Sandy Hook on saturday - haven't been there fore ages, and I've heard that the parking lots get filled up fast on the weekends.

So - does anyone what time we should get there by to get into the parking lot?

Also besides Sandy hook what other beaches are nice around there?
