I can't offer much help on sailing, but can help with general boating questions, navigating the Hudson, etc.

Ding, ding, ding! That's the one. Sounds like a pretty cool deal, to be honest. I do not know much about the club itself, so I will need to do more research. Perhaps other sailors in here can provide some feedback. I know there are a few boaters and kayakers in here (parkman, tommyc_37 and brewster come to mind). In any case, good job finding the club info. I wasn't able to locate it, even after focusing on Weehawken. It might be a little late into the season, but definitely something to keep in mind. I will call them tomorrow for more information on next courses.

Nice! I had never sailed before, and they helped me to pass the ASA certification exam with a score of 99. If I can do it, I'd say almost anyone can!
Let me know if you take the class and/or join their sailing club. Maybe we can crew together sometime.

I just took the sailing 101 class at True North Sailing School: http://sailtruenorth.com/
It was a blast and I highly recommend it to anyone interested in sailing.

I live directly on Liberty Harbor. I have blue water sailing experience and am looking for opportunities to crew on afternoon sails or longer. Let me know if you want to go out! Thanks.

There's also the Offshore Sailing School in LSP. I took beginner classes there and enjoyed it, although I didn't take the training further. It was a week-long course and was a nice stay-cation.

Couldn't agree more. I met "The Commodore" several times and he's a complete jerk (that's my VERY polite term). When I had my sailboat in Liberty Harbor Marina (North side of the Morris Canal) pre-9/11 his club boats would often set up their race course right across the marked entry channel into the canal. And they felt that they had right of way REGARDLESS of anything because they were "racing". I asked him to move the course and he basically told me to F-off. After I had some discussion with senior Coast Guard authorities they told him to move it or face criminal charges for interfering with a navigable waterway. Definitely go elsewhere. Been sailing all my life and I love it but this would be the last place I'd want a friend to go to.

While I fully support sailing in the NY Harbor, it's hard to shed a tear for the trust-fund baby Michael "Commodore" Fortenbaugh. First, anyone who bestows themselves with the title "Commodore" is automatically a tool. Second, Fortenbaugh had a small fleet of J-24s at the marina in Liberty State Park pre-Sandy. Following the storm, the club removed its boats from the marina because of dock damage on the north end of the marina. Fortenbaugh never replaced his LSP boats, despite there being a really dedicated group from New Jersey who used the boats regularly.
Fast forward to 2014: The Manhattan Sailing School gets kicked out of North Cove (lease expired, not renewed, given to higher bidder) and Fortenbaugh "reinvents" the club on the New Jersey side. One minute, he gave a big "Fuck You" to New Jersey, and now he has his entire fleet in New Jersey. Fortenbaugh apologized up and down to his club about moving to NJ. He spelled it out as a necessary evil. Patronize another club that is happy to set up shop in New Jersey, including the relatively-new Hoboken Sailing Club near 14th St.

In addition to Manhattan Sailing, there's True North Sailing School at Newport right next to Battello. I took a great course with them last summer.

I often ride my bike down to Liberty State Park and the sight of the local J-24 sailboats racing around their buoys North of Ellis Island really makes the harbor come alive. The bright multicolored spinnakers add so much to the seascape. I really miss them in the cold months of the year when everything is so grey.
