Worth saying though...

Speaking as a contractor, I would urge you NOT to call the big box stores.
Selfishly, it takes money away from your local contractors that actually have a stake in the area you live in.

Not really true. You're not getting some Home Depot/Lowes employee coming out in an orange/blue apron. I can't speak for Lowes, as I've got no experience with how they handle things, but HD hires contractors in the nearby area that can handle the volume, at an adequate price point and do the appropriate quality of work where sh@& doesn't come back to them on the regular (because they will have to fix the problems, that's the other side of being a corporate store that is - at least on the face of it - attempting to be some customer service giant).

I know one of their local hvac and electrical contracts is with Gilson & Sons out of Fairfield. That's certainly not local, local. It is, however a ~40 minute drive, which isn't exactly like outsourcing your tech support to India.

They've still got to do it right. Because if they keep doing it poorly, they'll lose the contract.

Objectively, they don't give you the same level of service that a proper tradesman will. This is less true of a field that requires a license like an electrician or a plumber, but is absolutely true of carpentry, flooring, etc. The details that set a good craftsman apart from the field are going to be entirely absent when you go through a large retailer. They have no interest in excelling, only getting to the next paying job so that they can sell you their house brand carpet.

Ok, I'm done. Phew. I feel better.

As always, the big boxes offer this service as well. Swing by the Home Depot or Lowes (depending on where you're located) and most of the people in the stores probably know how to get you set up.

I know that in HD's case, you can just call it in, too. Dunno if Lowes does that.

I used Dan Harris to install a ceiling fan, and he did a great job. He was also very responsive via email (harriselectricco@yahoo.com) and his quote was accurate. Good luck!
