And depending on which side of the street 'their' spot was, they might have needed it to go up by Thursday to realistically be visible to drivers in a timely manner. i.e., many people might not be expecting to have to move their car until the following week once it's parked on Thursday after street cleaning.

The JCPA requires 48 hrs to PROCURE the signs (meaning, you must request the signs at least 48 hours before the date/time on which they will go into effect). The signs must be POSTED at least 24 hours in advance to be enforceable. Third paragraph on this page: http://www.jcparking.org/signsandmeterbags.htm

I bet the cars were never towed anyway.
If I recall correctly from my move, 48 hours notice is what the Parking Authority instructs. Whatever it is, we posted our no parking signs with even more notice, and still cars were parked in the spots, and when we called the police, they never showed up.

I was thinking the same thing. To put up the signs on Saturday was definitely not cool, especially considering those signs were bought much earlier (the JCPA will only sell those signs M-F, until about 4:30 PM) so they could/should have been posted at least Friday late afternoon, early evening to be considerate towards your neighbors. In fact, unless you woke up super early Saturday, you wouldn't be able to get the signs enforced and cars towed, as the sign must be posted at least 24 hours before for them to be enforceable.

I agree. That's not enough notice. Completely inconsiderate. I don't see why OP is surprised that there were cars in 'their' desired space. Sweets was right to feel like a jerk.

i'm bummed if you towed these poor people - you put up signs on saturday for a sunday move? i never look at my car over the weekend after i park on friday. my friend had his car towed for the same reason - signs placed over the weekend are pretty unfair!

Call the non emergency police number 201 547 5477 They will send a car, the officer will run the plates, if they are local they will go to their house and request that they move, if they can't be reached they will call for a tow. The police handle these issues when the parking authority is closed.

We put up signs yesterday on Mercer St between Varick and Monmouth that we bought at the parking authority that say no parking - we are moving today and will have a truck. There are two cars in the spaces that we designated - if they do not move their cars we will end of blocking Mercer St. and making it a no access street while we load. I tried calling the parking authority but they do not have a weekend hour line. What are my options here? Do I call a tow company? Feel like a jerk but we need these people to move.....
