Robin, i dont think he has a direct connction to the school. The recognition is more generally for someone who has shown a commitment to education and JC. This is part of the message from the Family School Association detailing why he was chosen as the honoree:

Bob Hurley's coaching record is impressive with 27 state championships, over 1000 wins, and because he is only the 3rd high school coach ever to be inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. Even more impressive is that almost all of the students he coached in the past decades have graduated and gone on to college. He is a Jersey City native who has been giving back to the city not only coaching its youth but also showing them that education is critical to life and teaching them to be responsible citizens.

Please join us on February 6th to honor him and celebrate TECCS's commitment to Jersey City youth and their education!!!

There's also a great silent auction this year including original art work, tickets to broadway shows and sporting events, an autographed football from the NY Jets, an autographed picture of Derek Jeter, an autographed original drawing by Eric Carle, a sunset cruise around manhattan, lots of gift certificates to local restaurants, hair salons, auto repair shop, and more. Many thanks to all the businesses who are showing their support through these donations toward the auction.

Most attendees will be the parents of kids at the school, there will also be a few sponsors, elected officials, friends of parents and of course Bob Hurley. It certainly is worth checking out Casino in the Park if you have never been, and the Christmas Tree is usually up. This is the first year at that location, so no guarantees about next year, as more and more fundraisers like this are held at the Liberty House and Marine Park in LSP.

The school is on newer side, so many of the founders are still involved, and will likely be there if you have interest learning what they went through.

This is one of the "better" charters school (subjective) and many of the parents are very involved in our communities and city. My children do not attend (they go to the district schools), but I admire what the school has tried to do and will be supporting and going to the event.

This event is part of the FSA?s ongoing initiatives to support TECCS? mission of providing a safe caring community where ethics, service, and social justice are the principles that inform every aspect of school life. TECCS is a school where teachers lead and collaborate with students in a culture of rigorous academics and mutual respect; where analytical thinking and creativity are prized over learning by repetition; where children become individuals of integrity, insight, autonomy and socially productive citizens, workers, and leaders.

Like Jersey City, TECCS is extraordinarily diverse. With students from cultures all over the world, a minority population of more than 70%, and more than 34% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. Unfortunately, due to the current state education funding formula, TECCS receives less funding per pupil than any other public school in Jersey City. Indeed, its funding is the second lowest in the entire State, and less than half the funding per pupil provided to Jersey City?s traditional public schools -- yet TECCS students outperform the district average on standardized tests.
