A three-to-one edge in Jersey City's Bergen-Lafayette and Greenville communities helped the local teachers union's slate of school board candidates to clobber their competition in last week's Board of Education race.
The union's slate ? Gerald Lyons, Lorenzo Richardson and Joel Torres ? ran up blockbuster totals, winning every ward but the Downtown, according to official results from the Hudson County Clerk's Office. The results were released yesterday. And though the slate's performance in Ward E, which includes most of the Downtown, was their worst, they still won more votes there than their chief rivals won in any other ward. Lyons, Richardson and Torres raked up a total of 32,396 votes citywide. Their rivals ? Carol Harrison-Arnold, Monica Kress and Bertram Okpokwasili, backed by Parents for Progress ? nabbed a total of 16,439 votes. Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal

"P4P supporters were grim-faced on election night, but more sanguine the next day. They believe Richardson, Lyons and Torres, now that they are board members and not board critics, will establish a record P4P can run against next year. They do not expect Fulop's help."
Except, of course, that Richardson, Lyons and Torres will not be on the ballot next year. And in an off year election with no races except NJ state legislature, Garden State Forward (NJEA Superpac) may very well choose to make this a focus race again. Ever since they started to take Tepper's money I have withheld supporting the ticket as a whole, but I am generally supportive of their candidates (I voted for 2 out of 3 this time around). Still, their reaction to this comes across as remarkably tone deaf.

Allies of Jersey City parents group blame Fulop for devastating election loss
By Terrence T. McDonald | The Jersey Journal November 09, 2014 at 4:27 PM While Jersey City education group Parents for Progress faced an aggressive challenge from the local teachers union in the final week of campaigning before the Nov. 4 school board race, Mayor Steve Fulop was vacationing in France. "Wouldn't it be great if he stayed there?" a Parents for Progress (P4P) source said before he returned. As it turned out, it wasn't so great for P4P that Fulop was absent for this year's election, the first since 2010 in which he had no involvement. After supporting 12 of the previous 13 successful school board candidates, P4P's slate this year was trounced by its union-backed rivals. Not necessarily at the board meeting, and it generally has never been the board members who respond. With respect to your example, that is not something I would expect the board, or even the superintendent, to provide a response on the spot. It is absolutely inappropriate for a child to bring a gun to a school, but that is a matter that has to be investigated and disciplinary steps will have to be taken against both the student and the school administrators who did not respond properly. That is not something that occurs at a board meeting, and both the student and the employees may have due process rights, not to mention privacy rights.

Could this mean that the previous BoE officers had been doing a good job and we all need to eat humble pie ?

Oh please, there is a ton of opportunity in this city and you are just bitter because you have wasted how much money and time losing local elections? It's sad that a middle aged man can hold so much jealousy towards someone younger/more successful that he will just mock any initiative said successful person does. Can't we say that the residents of JC already "made it theirs" before you transplanted yourself here? How are those sour grapes Dan? You are like Yvonne, if Fulop cured cancer you would find a reason to complain about it. Sad sad man.

I agree with you Joshua, but basic questions are not being addressed. On particular parent asked the board why a specific school did not follow protocol when a student brought a gun to school. That is a legitimate question. The response was, we will answer that later, which they never did.
There are enough personnel present to answer 90% of questions. When Dr. Epps was in charge, he did not personally answer questions but he did direct someone to response to the public.

I agree with #1. I do not necessarily agree with 2. Public comments are to provide the board with information. It is not the exclusive source of information but a source of information. It is also not the purpose of public comment to allow someone to place an item on the agenda for action, or even deliberation or discussion.
In some cases, it may make sense for a board member to respond to someone's comments if they have a point of information that may clarify matters. And if an area is obviously of tremendous concern, then a board member may wish to address it, though again, it's not on the agenda, and not appropriate as an action item. But board members are not expected to be able to answer every public member's comment. When someone comes and complains about facilities, that complaint may or may not be true, it may be exaggerated. And even if it's accurate, the board is not empowered to put in its own work order and demand that the building be fixed. That's the job of the superintendent's office and her designees. Board members should listen, and be respectful. But there's no reason to turn everyone's comment into more grandstanding.

There are two things I am hoping this new board will address:
1 - restore videotaping the public comments 2 - respond to comments made by the public. Under the present board, they say, you comments will be addressed later, and it is not. Sometimes they they go into caucus. Ironically, the board under Epps did response to public comments immediately. You made not like the answer but you receive a response.

Coming from someone else, I'd be more inclined to agree. Regardless, progress took a major step backwards last night. I'd think you would see the bigger picture here, Dan.

Because that is currently the most critical issue in educating the children of Jersey City. What an absolutely idiotic thing to prioritize as your first agenda item for the new board, though you get points for consistency.

Big step backwards on the Education front.
Fulop deserves significant blame for this. If reports are accurate he quietly backed the JCEA pawns and this is a complete 180 degree turn from his past position. His selfish political strategy is that future teacher's union votes are more important than the children of Jersey City's education. Keep this in mind next time he ever hits you up for volunteering/money on his next political campaign...

Has anyone checked to see if any of the candidates have been bankrupt before, had credit declined, had a conviction or mention of fraud or any financial misdeeds ?
Has anyone checked to see if any of the candidates have bad credit ratings - Do we have any that can't even balance their own cheque books and run their own lives with constant financial hiccups ? We are about to give financial authority to a bunch of people that we really no nothing about and are most likely going to be in control or have influence, on the largest some of money they have never had any experience with or will ever again when the next election occurs in years to come.

Children don't behave as badly as some tempting to be on the Board of Education - what a poor example of candidates we have !
We have a system failure with many candidates running for the Board of Education - Then we ask ourselves why the school system is failing our children year after year, BoE after BoE ! JC must have the highest ratio of public servant rejects then any other city in the U.S

You have to understand that Lorenzo is a crusader for the oppressed people of Jersey City. At the end of the day, the current Board and the Superintendent are tools of the oppressing corporate, neo-colonialist power structure that rules this City, this country and the world. True crusaders like Lorenzo and Kabili Tayari understand this dynamic. Where would we be without them to lead the way (heavy sarcasm).

It's unfortunate that he feels he has to double down on his statement.
I've said elsewhere, I do not believe Mr. Richardson's comment can be credibly construed as a threat. What he really was telling the board was to eff off. And it was done at a meeting, preceded by several similar meetings, with a raucus crowd that often tried to shout down and disrupt proceedings, and in some cases did make borderline threats. So while his statement was not a direct threat, he was playing to that crowd and trying to cause a scene. He could have said "I did not mean it as a threat, but I realize given the environment how it was inappropriate to use such language. I'm sorry." That would have ended the whole thing. Instead, he insists that it means he's some sort of righteous crusader and that everyone else is out to get our students.
