the bike rack at city hall has abandoned bikes that have been there for months

Report them through the RRC app or call their number (201) 547-4900. At the market this past weekend next to city hall I saw a small group of used bikes. It looked like they recondition old bikes for sale. Anyone know who they are? Maybe they could use some of these old bikes for parts or as a base to rebuild.

Have you tried reporting it to the city through the JC Resident Response Center (or JC RRC Fix-It)? You can access it through the city's website and there is also an ap. I know. They've been incredibly responsive the few times I've called to report issues.

Reported the problem through the app. Thanks!

funny how it takes a crook less than a minute to get a lock off but it takes city hall 6 days and counting.

I gave my report of abandoned bikes a couple days to make it's way through the system. If you provide an email address you are emailed a link where you can check on the status of your report. The website says my report was transferred to the police department for review. I think it was transferred to the police because the app doesn't have an option for abandoned bikes, so I chose abandoned vehicle.

A few days later and the rusty frames are still there. I called the RRC, left a message and got a call back the same day. They said the report had been transferred to the parking authority, but she didn't know why and that wan't the right place for it to go.

She said she was going to transfer it ti the DPW, as they are the people with the tools who can cut the bike locks. I'll give it a few more days and see if they old bikes are removed.

tl;dr call the RRC and follow up on any reports you make through the app. It makes a difference.

Keep us posted, let's see how long before something is done.
I've used the emergence responce app also myself & the only thing I don't like is where it asks u to put an address & that's whole page is a little screwed up from me using it on my phone.
No I don't have an Iphone but I hope that's not the prob.
Thx

About 2 years ago, I emailed Councilman Fulop's office about the same problem. Someone was put on the case and vigorously pursued it. They had a tough time determining who was responsible, but I was finally told it was the Port Authority. They continued to pursue it and at about the same time, the new bike racks were put up. I have no idea if my complaint had anything to do with it. Also, many of the abandoned bikes were removed.

Within a year, the situation was the same - abandoned bikes taking up many spots. The conclusion is that there has to be a more time sensitive approach to resolving the problem.

Not to digress, I think the NO BIKE PARKING signs by the parking signs in the plaza are a joke. Where is one supposed to park? I've started parking across the street near A1 Deli at one of the parking signs. When I go to work late, around 10am, there's almost nothing available.

If I had the energy, I'd write to Fulop's office again.

I've talked to the police about abandoned bikes in the past and they don't really care for it. Since the plaza is (I think) the property of the Grove Point building, you could probably direct it to them. I'm sure they're just as eager as you to get rid of abandoned bikes out front.

I think 24 hours is a good thing to post, but a little draconian to enforce. I can see somebody leaving a bike for a couple of days unexpectedly, due to some emergency, bad weather, or any change in plans.

But yeah, some of those bikes are clearly abandoned and just preventing others from using the racks.

a simple electrical cable tag could be affixed on the wheel or spokes with a time and date prescribed - after 24 hrs out come the bolt cutters and to the impound yard - then after 7 days if its not claimed with the impound fee paid, the bike goes to a charity group or public auction if its a snappy bike

Who do I talk to about having abandoned bikes Grove street removed? The sign says that any bike left for more than 24 hours will be considered abandoned and removed. I think that may be a little much, but there are some rusting frames missing most of their parts that need to go. Now that it's warmer and more people are riding bikes (which I think is awesome) I would like to make sure there is space for people to lock up.
