Great photos... always wondered what the area looked like years ago?? The photos seeing the base of the Towers are something... only building I could recognize left in PH is the Colgate Building at Grand and Greene. There used to be an old Polish man named Harry who used to talk about what neighborhood was like... 80 something, passed on a few years ago, but when I saw the Morris Boat Basin, finally understood what he was describing about growing up on Sussex by that area.

It's about what kind of gentrification. Some people want to build a nice, small city community while a handful of misguided fools want "party town".

The darkest days of JC were before my time (as an adult), so I relay on pictures to see what it was like back then. However, I have been in the area since the 90's and I am amazed at how far things progressed. When I graduated college, I tried to buy a 4 family brownstone in downtown (I think it was around Hamilton Park). Being in my early 20's and not making a whole lot, even with the two of us, we couldn't swing enough cash to make the down payment. Asking price was $145k. I just wish JC could manage to reform that cesspool of a Building Department and become a lot more business friendly overall (i.e. reduce the fees and multiple redundant inspections that drive up the cost of opening a small restaurant. Plus with a renaissance going on in the USA in the chemical field (due to cheap natural gas), it would be nice for one of those new GTL plants to come to NJ instead of being built in Louisiana. It would bring good paying jobs not tied to the financial sector.

It's amusing that people even think there is a debate about whether gentrification is a good thing.

This flickr link is better. That movie shows the waterfront a bit but you have to remember that it's been "art directed and propped" to look even more dystopian.

Indeed, when I first moved downtown on Erie I was told never, ever go to the waterfront after dark LOL! The waterfront was known for drugging, rave parties and shooting porn.
