The school that is used by pre-k students was built to originally hold the Golden Door Charter School, a pet project of former Mayor Schundler. Then, you could not bond money for charter schools so it was constructed as a community center. Ward F also received a community center that is used for that purpose, so I believe this building should be used for what it intended purpose, a community center.

Parents on this board seem more interested in lobbying for things that make their life simpler and more convenient - improving education standards for their kids is secondary. Case in point - parents want the convenience of preK on their doorstep, and want the City to pay an additional $12.5k/ year/ student, with little or no direct benefit to the student. Your posts are put in perspective - you are out to milk the system for all you can get. If you were really interested in improving kids standards of education you would be beating down every door you could, to demand that this broken education system is fixed.

Academic Performance and Spending over the Past 40 Years: Not only have dramatic spending increases been unaccompanied by improvements in performance, the same is true of the occasional spending declines experienced by some states. At one time or another over the past four decades, Alaska, California, Florida, and New York all experienced multi-year periods over which real spending fell substantially (20 percent or more of their 1972 expenditure levels). And yet, none of these states experienced noticeable declines in adjusted SAT scores?either contemporaneously or lagged by a few years. Indeed, their score trends seem entirely disconnected from their rising and falling levels of spending.

My tenants, once the kids reach grade school, head out of Jersey City. They don't have the money for private school.
The last family moved to Fort Lee.

To stem the tide of exodus in the State (yes much of it retirees or those priced out) and address the needs of a burgeoning population in our city (families increasingly going back to the urban areas/cities rather than suburbs), we'll need to ensure better schools and STEM programs.

lots of families are deciding not to "flee" to he suburbs. With that, they also want a decent education for their kids. We do need to attract the best and brightest to JC schools and we are not going to do that by bashing teachers and cutting their pay.

And with it being open season on teachers, unions, and pensions in general, good luck attracting new teachers to fill those classrooms. Of course Gov. Christie is correct in saying we can't afford to pay these pensions and benefits anymore. How could we, we're too busy paying trillions to bankers to bail them out of the ditch they dug (and our economy they destroyed), not to mention the all the taxes the rich aren't paying and lest we forget the insane tax abatements given to builders around here. Keep beating up on municipal workers and when this generation retires you'll have nothing but ex-cons and future ex-cons to chose from to fill these unwanted, unappreaciated, and underpaid public service positions. But just think of all that extra money you'll have JC.

Study: Jersey City school district to see 25% boost in enrollment by 2017
By Terrence T. McDonald The Jersey Journal Enrollment in the Jersey City public-school district will increase by 25 percent between now and 2017, with over half of the expected increase coming in the Downtown, according to a study released this week by the district. All of the enrollment gains will be produced in grades K through 5, the study finds. The 144-page study, produced by New York firm Urbanomics at a cost of $89,440, makes a host of recommendations to accommodate the additional thousands of students, including reassigning some students in the Liberty Harbor North area to Liberty High School instead of Ferris, and transforming some PK through 8 schools into K through 5 schools in an effort to fill two underutilized middle schools.
