I have been too close to fire on 3 occasions including seeing a dead smoke inhalation victim laid out on the sidewalk. The firemen are truly heroic. If you want a little taste of what they deal with have someone blindfold you, spin you around and send you into a strange apartment with the lights out. Then fumble around and try to find someone hiding in the place. Just imagine what the smoke and fire add to the equation. I am glad no one was badly hurt.

Man, Buon Appetito was mine too. Was thinking of getting takeout dinner there after work. They had the great spot, great pizza and italian food! I hope they reopen and stay in Jersey City.

This is devastating. Losing one of the best Italian eatery and 22 people homeless

Wow - after watching the video, definitely have a lot more respect for all the firefighters. Takes a lot of guts and courage to get up, and stay up, on that roof in those conditions!

Both buildings burned for so long I would guess they'll need to be torn down and rebuilt.

Best case is full gut job but not likely.

That is some footage!
It's very windy today too. Thank God no lives lost except of a cat- poor cat.

Looks like no human lives were lost, but apparently a cat died which is sad. Has anybody been over there? What is the shape of the buildings?

Thoughts to all effected. Great block. Awesome neighbors. I hope they recover soon.

I was apparently an electrical short that started the fire.

Is Buon Appetito destroyed? So sad. Loved that eatery.

The fire started in the top floor apartment. The guy lost his cat in the fire.

As of 20 minutes ago, it was not under control. Firefighters were not even able to get into the buildings again. They were forced out because of the flames after they first arrived.

Does anyone know if the fire is now under control? Saw it on my way home about 30 min ago, and still tons of smoke coming out.

Prayers for everyone...

4-alarm blaze rips through apartment building in Downtown Jersey City

By Lois DiTommaso/The Jersey Journal
on November 27, 2013 at 2:20 PM

Flames roared through the roof of an apartment building on Grove Street near Bay Street in Downtown Jersey City this afternoon, sending thick smoke into the street obscuring visibility.

The 4-alarm blaze had spread into a second building in the row of five residential buildings shortly after 2 p.m.

The blaze was concentrated on the top floor and roof of the first building, which contained a pizza restaurant on the street level and three floors of apartments above.
One firefighter was reported injured and was taken out of the building on a stretcher shortly after 2 p.m.

Firefighters closed Grove Street from Christopher Columbus Drive to Bay Street, creating traffic problems in the Downtown Jersey City area during the busy Thanksgiving holiday getaway period.

Firetrucks and ambulances clogged the streets as neighbors watched the flames spread this afternoon.

Was walking to the gym when I saw it. Lots of fire trucks still coming. Saw on twitter (not sure if picture will link): "@stephenmusgrave: Fire on Grove St between Bay & Morgan. Buon Appetito on ground floor. #JerseyCity http://t.co/RddFXYHubo"

Just found out it is the building where the Italian Deli on Grove is located. Also the building next door.

Sounds really bad. I heard over the JCFD radio that one firefighter fell off roof. There are repeated calls to all firefighters to evacuate. It sounds awful.

I'm listening to the JC fire dept. sounds like a pizza place is on fire and fire is spreading fast. Can get near the plaza full of smoke and roads are blocked off. No PATH delays listed though.
