Thanks! Humane society was able to take towels, pillows and sheets. Hope House is not currently accepting donations.
Any other ideas for where I can drop off gently used women's clothing?

Where can I donate used clothing, towels, bed linens, etc. in downtown Jersey City to a non profit?
Not interested in Salvation Army. Heard poor reviews of Goodwill. Thoughts?

I have three big bags of girls ( size 8 ) clothing and some adult stuff. Any suggestions on where to donate it?

There are PlanetAid boxes by the BestBuy, but after a little research on this organization, I decided not to donate to them.
I've dropped off some stuff at a donation box in the parking lot behind St. Lucy's Shelter on 16th and Grove. (and there was not a band of gypsies there to waylay the drop)

Finally getting around to donating these clothes. I've tried calling them a couple times the past few days and no one answers. Anyone else got a line on where to donate? About to say #OOPS# it and go to Goodwill, despite my reservations about how they treat their workers.

Last time there was a typhoon, there was a Jersey City collection. There will probably be one for Typhoon Haiyan.

this is great to know! they got a really good rating on Charity Navigator: http://www.charitynavigator.org/index ... &orgid=11547#.UnvZHpQiGTs there's another veteran's charity that does pickup - VVA (vietnam vets of America, I think?) but they've got a really lousy score, with the bulk of their cash going toward administrative overhead.

There's also the CAUSE Center at 741 Bergen Avenue (just off Fairmount). They're usually open between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. and they're a local organization.

i've got a bag full of stuff to donate at some point soon, and certainly don't mind donating to a more ethical receiver of goods - just name me one

also, a lot of clothing donated to SA and GW ends up in underdeveloped countries. sounds good, right? cheap levis for everybody! but it's actually having a negative effect on local textile industries: http://www.theroot.com/articles/polit ... ng_clothes_to_africa.html

I used to shop/donate to the Salvation Army and Goodwill regularly but the SA's political lobbying against gay rights and Goodwill's worker abuses mean they won't get any more of my $$. I wasn't aware of either of these issues until friends brought it to my attention so figured I'd pass the info along in case these are factors you consider when donating. There's a bit of info here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/10 ... -companies_n_4110344.html http://money.msn.com/now/blog--goodwi ... d-workers-pennies-an-hour

Agreed on taking the towels (and, blankets!) to the Liberty Humane Society. The last time I stopped in there to ask what items they needed most, food was number #1, but they did mention that they could always use any old towels or blankets.

Try Liberty Humane Society - I believe they can use them for the pets in their care. They are a great local organization and always in need of monetary and other types of donations:
235 Jersey City Blvd Jersey City, NJ 07305 (201) 547-4147 Across from Liberty Science Center - easy parking on the street

they've told me that they are often in need of kitchen items, too. weirdly, they don't need toys/books (or at least they didn't the last time I dropped off clothing). here is their number: (201) 420-1070

Thecharity below sounds great. Thanks for the info - I wasn't even aware of it and have lots of baby clothes to donate.
Otherwise, I always give to Salvation Army (right by the Holland Tunnel, across street just past the buy rite). I think it is a good charity, as they run a lot of needed programs such as soup kitchens and substance abuse rehab centers.

I walk my dogs past there several times a day and I see lots of women with young kids. It is an emergency shelter. When you consider that many of the residents literally fled with nothing, it would be my choice as well. Now that I think about it, I have a ton of VHS tapes I bet they could use. I'll call too.

Hope House, on 2nd Street just off Erie. Season-appropriate womens and childrens clothing is always welcomed.
