Cremation, Burial ... or should I have stuffed and mounted my 2 inch gold fish ? Then again my cat had other thoughts

No. It's just a physical replication of your pet. Personality and temperament aren't guaranteed.

I love Dr. Hatch, and I'm glad to hear he does at home euthanasia. Not there, and hope not to be for a long time, but good to know, thanks.

A few years ago, I had to put my dog down because of illness and paid to have her cremated alone. I suppose it's something that is not easy to verify, but I'd like to think that I got what I paid for.

Dr. Hatch, Secaucus Animal Hospital, does home euthanasia and contracts cremation services.

This place was very considerate and reasonably priced.. You will need a car to get there. You can wait about 2 hours and leave with your pets ashes.

Some people choose to clone their pets so they can come back to life.

There is a company called My Friend Again that offers this service. However, it looks very expensive.

You should also check out Eleos Vet. When my cat was dying last year we didn't want to make one last trip to the vet. Dr. Barnes and her assistant came to the house and were very caring, gentle, and went at our pace. They took the body to be cremated (you can opt for common or private). You can even go up to the pet cemetery when they do the cremation to be sure it's your pet you are getting back.

It wasn't the least expensive option, but I wouldn't have done it any other way.

When my cat was dying of cancer last year (lungs filling with fluid), I didn't want to take her to the vet--which of course she hated--for that one final visit. My vet at West Side Animal Hospital was willing to pay a house call to administer euthanasia, but could only do it on a weekday. When my cat's condition worsened over the weekend, I called Pet Requiem (http://petrequiem.com/), and Dr. Wendy McCulloch came to my home on a Saturday night to euthanize my cat. It wasn't cheap, and to be honest, my cat wasn't thrilled about having a stranger appear in her house to give her a shot, but Dr. McCulloch was very gentle and sympathetic, and overall I think it was a much less stressful end for my cat than having to go to the vet.

Pet Requiem also handles aftercare, which included removal of the remains and cremation by Hamilton Pet Meadow. I chose individual cremation and got a box full of ashes shipped back to me ten days later. Agreed, there's no way to know if I got the right ashes--but I basically decided not to worry about it. You can also choose simple cremation, in which the remains are cremated with those of other animals and buried at Hamilton Pet Meadow.

My cat died in February. I brought him to Westside Animal Hospital. I had a choice of having him communally cremated and having his ashes spread on the grounds of the pet cemetery in PA or I could pay extra (~$150) and have his remains separately cremated and returned to me in a box with a nameplate. I did the latter.

Now, whether the ashes in the box are all Otis is something I can't be 100% certain of. I'd like to believe they are.

I believe that NJ law does not allow the return of a euthanized/decease pet to the owner as it's considered hazardous waste. I know that New York State (not sure about New York City) does not have this law and will allow you to take your pet home with you after euthanization. When pets are cremated, they are usually cremated with other animals, so what you will receive back is sadly a potpourri of animal remains. I had a friend in high school who's mother was licensed as a wild animal rescuer and she would perform at-home euthanasia for close friends and family. I have no idea if it was legal or not, but I'm sure it helped to lighten the load of an already emotional situation. It's possible that these type of services are available and worth looking into.

Hi,

My pets are okay, but they are getting older. And I would like to be ready when the time comes. What do people in Jersey City (or in any city for that matter) do when their pet dies?

In suburb where I used to live, we could either bury it in the backyard (not an option here) or take it to a vet who can send to cremation.

I'm sure such service exists here too. And they probably say that they can get the ash back afterward.

But I'm very suspicious of these services. How would you know that the ash that you get back is of your pet? I'm almost certain that it's not even though they may say it is.

Anyway, I'm sure people lost their pets. What did you do?

Thanks in advance,

Atsushi
