carpenter ants leave frass (debris) near where they chew the wood. Google it but it looks like dirt piles. Carpenter ants tend to go wherever the wood is wet/damp.

Termites tend to be more localized and usually leave mud tubes that are pretty obvious. Again, google for pics.

Termites nests are underground. The come up to the building to feed. Its expensive to treat (I did it last year). The exterminator will have to inject pesticide into the ground around the entire foundation of the home.

Or you could use one of these on the building.

The termites might be in the vacant building, but if its in your building your landlord is the one to tell. An exterminator will solve the problem in your building, regardless of the source, let the City deal with the property next door. The Mayor's Action Office sounds like the right place to start.

start with the Mayors Action Office, 201-547-4900.

i would think your building owner would want to do something given that these insects are ruining his investment too

Good morning,

Does anyone know who to contact in regards to vacant un kept properties? My issue is that the building next door is vacant and falling apart and I think it may be the cause of what looks like termites but may be carpenter ants infesting my apartment. I am a renter, does this mean only the landlord can complain? hundreds of these thing came in through the windows and it looked like even through the spaces around the electrical socket last night. It also happened in the apartment below. Hundreds! All of a sudden. I want to get everyone in the building to complain about the eyesore next door. Thanks for your help and sorry if this is the wrong spot to ask. I did a search but didnt find any contacts.
