I think this would be a poor use of resources. There are real threats (crime) every day at light rail stations in other parts of the city.
If anything, those stations could use beefed up security.

Statistically, Newport has close to zero crime.Quote:

Isn't the National Guard at the PATH entrances already ?

Jersey City man charged with having explosive devices at home and on train prior to Boston bombings

By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal
April 26, 2013 at 12:45 AM

On the day of the Boston Marathon bombing, a Jersey City man was charged with having explosive devices in his home and the next day he was charged with having explosive devices aboard a train in Hoboken, officials said.
None of the devices were "completed explosive devices," authorities said tonight..

Mykyta Panasenko, 27, of Newport Parkway, is charged with having "two destructive devices, specifically improvised explosive devices constructed from a cylinder containing Pyrodex (black powder)" on April 5, the criminal complaint says.

He is also charged with recklessly creating widespread risk of injury or damage to a building ... by constructing the explosive devices, according to the charges filed after the investigation led by the Jersey City Police Department and NJ Transit Police Department.

Panasenko is also charged with having two improvised explosive devices on April 7 aboard an NJ Transit Train leaving Hoboken and bound for Suffern, the complaint says.

In a preared statement, law enforcement authorities said tonight that "there is no indication at this point of the investigation that he intended to detonate a device in his building or on the transit system. Police recovered components of an explosive device at his home, not a completed device. However, the investigation revealed that he did transport completed devices from his home at some point."

The events occurred more than a week before the bombings at the Boston Marathon that left 3 dead and more than 260 people injured.

The probe began when the Jersey City Police Department's Bomb Squad responded to Panasenko's home after getting information from the New York Police Department and the FBI, Jersey City Police Deputy Chief Peter Nalbach said today.

Inside the residence police found "materials that may have been used to make an explosive device," Nalbach said, adding that the information came from a tip provided by someone who knows Panasenko. The discovery in the apartment and ongoing investigation led to the charges.

Asked if officials in Boston investigating the Marathon bombing would have known about the explosives found in Jersey City, FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller in Boston said this afternoon that "All incidents involving explosives are reviewed at the national level to determine if there is a linkage."

A NJ Transit spokesman said he had no additional information on the allegations against Panasenko. The FBI in Newark could not be reached for comment.

The complaint charging Panasenko with having explosive devices at his home was signed on April 15, the day of the Boston bombings. The complaint charging him with having explosive devices on the train was signed on April 16.

Panasenko was charged on a summons and released, Hudson County Prosecutor's Office spokesman Gene Rubino said. The most serious charges he faces carries a possible sentence of up to five years in prison upon conviction. He made his first court appearance on the charges on Wednesday in Central Judicial Processing court in Jersey City.

The Port Authority Police Department and FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force were also involved in the investigation.

Rubino said the matter remains under investigation.

There was no answer at Panasenko's door today.

Law enforcement officials clarified tonight details regarding the arrest of a local man who had materials that could be combined to make an explosive in his home.

Mykyta Panasenko, 27, Jersey City, appeared in court recently after he was charged with possession of destructive devices and creating a risk of widespread damage. A search of his residence led to the recovery of explosive components, according to Jersey City Police Officials. There were no completed explosive devices recovered during the search of his residence or any train, officials stated.

The Jersey City Police Department?s Special Investigations Unit, the lead agency on the case, is working in conjunction with New Jersey Transit and the Hudson County Prosecutor?s Office in the ongoing investigation. The Federal Bureau of Investigation and other federal and state agencies have been notified about the case.

Arrested on April 15, Panasenko is charged with two counts by JCPD, third and fourth degree crimes of possession of a destructive device and creating a risk of widespread damage, respectively. NJ Transit Police also Panasenko similarly. Due to the degree of the alleged crimes, Panasenko was charged on a summons complaint and released on his own recognizance.
There is no indication at this point of the investigation that he intended to detonate a device in his building or on the transit system. Police recovered components of an explosive device at his home, not a completed device. However, the investigation revealed that he did transport completed devices from his home at some point, officials said.

This advisory was released in response to numerous media requests to clarify information released by other sources earlier in the day. Since the matter is still considered an ongoing investigation, officials will only make releases about such they deem necessary and prudent to inform the public or if deemed a matter of public safety.///

Some people like to play with explosives. That doesn't make them a potential terrorist.

JUST SAW FROM Eyewitness News Ch. 7

"He was making small bombs in his apartment and blow them up in Upstate NY. They found him harmless" :/

uhhh... how about he's testing how successful it will be next time he actually plans a Boston Marathon Bomb attack?

Very strange timing here.

In the aftermath of the Boston bombing, it's very creepy to think how easy it might be for somebody to bring a powerful bomb in a backpack onboard a Path or MTA train.

Really, what is to stop somebody from going through the turnstile at Grove Street with a bomb inside a backpack??

More than a week before three people were killed and more than 175 people were injured in the Boston Marathon bombings, a Jersey City man was arrested at the train station in Hoboken while carrying two home-made bombs, authorities say.

Police also found explosive devices in the Newport Parkway home of Mykyta Panasenko, 27, Jersey City police said today. According to a criminal complaint, Panasenko is charged with having "two destructive devices, specifically improvised explosive devices (IEDs) constructed from a cylinder containing Pyrodex (black powder)" on April 5, the criminal complaint says.

He is also charged with recklessly creating widespread risk of injury or damage to a building which normally contains 25 or more persons by constructing the explosive devices, according to the charges filed by the FBI-led Joint Terrorism Task Force and the Port Authority Police Department.

The FBI did not return calls for more details.

Authorities also charged Panasenko with having two improvised explosive devises at 4 p.m. on April 7 aboard an NJ Transit train leaving Hoboken and bound for Suffern, N.Y., the complaint says.

Earlier this month the Jersey City Police Department's Bomb Squad responded to the home of Panasenko after getting information from the New York Police Department and the FBI, Jersey City Police Deputy Chief Peter Nalbach said this afternoon.

Inside the residence police found "materials that may have been used to make an explosive device," Nalbach said, adding that the information came from a tip provided by someone who knows Panasenko.

The complaint charging Panasenko with having explosive devises at his home was signed on April 15, the day of the Boston Marathon bombings, and the complaint charging him with having explosive devices on the train was signed on April 16.

Panasenko appeared in Central Judicial Processing court on Wednesday, where he heard the charges.
