This is so common in multi-dwelling buildings. When your safety and well-being are intertwined with the quality of your neighbors intellect it sucks. Ever live in a building with a drunk who smokes? Like having scratch-off tickets where you win fiery death.

Our building on Sussex (between Washington and Warren) was broken into again this weekend. The basement door was pried open and a bike was stolen. So annoying (and really crappy for the guy who lost his bike).

Had a guy ring my doorbell today around 2:15pm. He claimed he was from PSE&G and was following up on a mail I hadn't responded to. He asked if I was the account holder. I didn't answer the door - I told him I was working and to arrange a time in advance. I didn't get a good look at him, only from behind: green/blue knitted cap, dark blue jacket, black jeans, light brown boots, possibly African-American, mid 30s-40 at a guess.

I spoke afterwards to PSE&G and they said they don't sent out unsolicited callers, and it may have been a competitor trying to get me to switch. However I did report it to JCPD. Thought I'd pass it on.

This probably goes without saying, but ask your neighbors to remove any menus that remain in your door for more than a day (in case you neglect to tell your neighbors you'll be out of town).

Hello Downtown.

This past summer there was a rash of home break ins around Hamilton Park and Harsimus Cove areas.

The East district actually put out flyers and I put some up in the few blocks around where I live and in some local shops.

1) Lock your doors. Inside and the outside one you usually leave open. Windows too.

2) If you see suspicious menus or other stuff stuck in a crack in your door (at waist level or higher) that means they are checking / casing your home. If these items stay up too long, you are ripe for break ins. (on vacation or something)

3) If you live in a multi unit building... do not buzz in random strangers. All visitors should be expected and announced.

4) Do check your building hardware. There are devices that can stop Pry-bars and cost like $20 bucks and are easy to install. Need help? Check out Cantanio Lock Company on Grove St. or Monaco Lock Company on Newark Ave.

If you see suspicious activity call the NON-EMERGENCY Police NUMBER at (201) 547-5477

If you see violent crime... call 911 right away.

Thanks,

Fletch

Sounds like the exact same style of break in that happened at our building last week. Door was pryed open. In my experience the first line of defense are responsible neighbors, everyone needs to make sure they completely close the main entrance door and that it locks completely, and don't buzz any random person in if you have an intercom system. Talk to your neighbors, you might be surprise how clueless they can be. Second line of defense is that your main entrance door ACTUALLY LOCKS. I've seen some real ridiculously sloppy doors in a lot of the older homes around here. Third line of defense is what I'm working on right now: installing a home security system (alarm) and IP security web cam. Check Amazon, all can be done on the cheap.

Our apartment on Sussex, right around the corner from this break-in) was broken into a few months ago. The main deadbolted door was forced open. It turns out the door wasn't even connected to our "alarm" system.
