I heard that Pecoraro's has closed and/or is selling. Anybody know if this is true?

Yes they are Italian owned they kept the original German name of the bakery from years ago as some businesses have done to retain a customer base. The bakery specializes in Italian cakes, pastries, and cookies along with the usual American fare, they do the best of both worlds.

Geohrig's Bakery on Central Ave is Italian owned they make a number of Italian-American goodies. Parking could be a problem!

so the answer is yes, there are two gems of italian bakeries downtown, both great in their ways. Quote:

I second and third the sweets at Monteleone's, though the place is diet kryptonite. They're my go-to local bakery for holidays and special occasions. Their rum cake is now my favorite birthday cake, and their cookies by the pound are delicious and affordable (and they'll let you choose your favorites!). Their cupcakes are only 50 cents, and they're quite good, though not so pretty. If you're not nearby, it's really worth the trip. The quality is consistent and it's a great value.

No doubt -- Pecoraro's & Second St bakery -- also a little off topic -- but still great is the fresh Brooklyn Polish Rye Bread -- huge loafs only $4 at Europa on Jersey Ave.

Try 2nd street Bakery... 402 2nd St The cinnamon rolls, I get a few and bring them back up here , so very worth it, great treat. Also, pricing is correct here, they understand who lives and shops here. Extremely reasonable.

Pecoraro's is great. Fresh italian bread everyday and the stuffed breads are on point. 100 yr old coal fired brick oven.
Second St bakery is also no joke, cant beat their pizza bread. If you need italian cookies, pastries or cakes go to Monteleone's on Newark Ave next to Casa Dante, 5 min walk from JSQ PATH. Doesnt get more old school than Monteleone's, you can't go wrong there. No hipster, gourmet, organic overpriced nonsense at any of these 3 places. That's why they've all been in business forever.

I've wondered the exact same thing. I posted about it recently in the Made with Love thread.
Pecararo's is great for breads, but if I want a good cookie or slice of pie, there are not many options. Cocoa's new location is a bit far for me when I just want to stop in when I have a sweet tooth craving.

Pecoraro's period! Their bread is a pastry in my eyes.

I often wonder why there is no standard Italian bakery in downtown JC. One that makes bread and rolls fresh every day and also carries italian cookies, cakes, pastries. I feel like every bakery that opens is more of a "gourmet" type place and ends up closing in a year.
