It was open Thursday morning/afternoon...

I thought it recently changed ownership in the last 3 or 4 years which brought about some monir changes...

If it is for sale, I certainly hope it does not change too much. Definitely a JC treasure.

Yes they are Italian owned they kept the original German name of the bakery from years ago as some businesses have done to retain a customer base. The bakery specializes in Italian cakes, pastries, and cookies along with the usual American fare, they do the best of both worlds.

Geohrig's Bakery on Central Ave is Italian owned they make a number of Italian-American goodies. Parking could be a problem!

so the answer is yes, there are two gems of italian bakeries downtown, both great in their ways.

I second and third the sweets at Monteleone's, though the place is diet kryptonite. They're my go-to local bakery for holidays and special occasions. Their rum cake is now my favorite birthday cake, and their cookies by the pound are delicious and affordable (and they'll let you choose your favorites!). Their cupcakes are only 50 cents, and they're quite good, though not so pretty. If you're not nearby, it's really worth the trip. The quality is consistent and it's a great value.

I've wondered the exact same thing. I posted about it recently in the Made with Love thread.

Pecararo's is great for breads, but if I want a good cookie or slice of pie, there are not many options. Cocoa's new location is a bit far for me when I just want to stop in when I have a sweet tooth craving.

I often wonder why there is no standard Italian bakery in downtown JC. One that makes bread and rolls fresh every day and also carries italian cookies, cakes, pastries. I feel like every bakery that opens is more of a "gourmet" type place and ends up closing in a year.
