There are plenty of alternatives - no pipeline, running it from Staten Island, increased use and investment in renewables, other routes, etc.

The FERC and Spectra rejected these alternatives for various reasons such as cost prohibitiveness (read - less profitable) and basically left the city with no other options.

JC, NOGasPipeline, NJ Sierra Club, and several other organizations are now suing the FERC in federal court.

True - it doesnt look like a natural gas pipeline, but still shows the dangers of pipelines in general. Especially ones that go through heavily populated urban environments.

Leaks, human errors, valve disruptions, methane emissions, in addition to unknown and undisclosed chemicals used in the process pose enough threats to our city - not even taking into consideration the potential for explosion.

Hoboken Avenue in Journal Square neighborhood of Jersey City has been closed from Summit Avenue to Central Avenue this afternoon after gas company officials got an unusually high reading of natural gas in the air.

Jersey City Fire Director Armando Roman confirmed that the gas leak is coming from a parking lot in the area of 450 Hoboken Ave. and PSE&G crews are working to find the leak. That area of Hoboken Road is near the Hudson County Administration Building to the south and State Highway 139 to the north.

Roman called it an "exterior leak," meaning that it is not coming from a home or commercial building, and could be a gas pipe break under the ground.

Roman said that vehicular and pedestrian traffic is being blocked in the area as a precaution. A fire official at the scene said that 450 Hoboken Ave., a Hudson County garage, has been evacuated.

And that was a result of regular gas lines - not a 30 inch diameter high pressure pipeline.

Gas lines that had ruptured during the fire had been fueling the blaze until the gas company shut them off, officials said. Gas power was restored at the buildings around 6:30 p.m. yesterday, officials said.

There are potential dangers and environmental associated with all of these though the EIS did not address these - only the impact from construction.

Basically anything near 17.67 (near 18th street) will be the most dangerous as far as I can tell.

Seems there are close to one hundred. They are either for some futuristic looking DT building or gas pipe stanchions.

The disadvantages FAR outweigh the advantages.

Spectra claims that the pipeline will be safe, provide the city with additional revenue, and create jobs - those are the advantages however:

Pipelines arent safe - leaks, emissions, potential explosions (recent West Virgina, San Bruno, Edison), targets for terrorism.

The pipeline route goes through many areas which the city has identified as having development potential. This would actually create many more lasting jobs and provide the city with greater tax revenue in addition to community improvements.

Basically, JC is bearing all the risks without any of the rewards so that Spectra can provide NYC with natural gas. These companies have extremely bad track records in regards to assuming accountability for pollution (air, chemical waste, water) and don't have to live near their pipelines.

HILLSBOROUGH ? A full pipeline has been shut down while crews work to make repairs after a 25-gallon gasoline leak near Route 206, according to Buckeye Pipe Line Co.

The pipeline transports about 140,000 barrels of refined petroleum products per day from Linden to Macungie, Pa., according to Buckeye, which owns the pipeline.

Jersey City agency grants easement to Spectra Energy; City Councilman objects

A Jersey City City Councilman last week used his opposition to the controversial Spectra Energy natural-gas pipeline to vote against granting the Houston energy giant an easement to place the pipe underneath property owned by a city agency.

Councilman at large Rolando Lavarro, also a member of the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency board, was the only member of that board who voted against granting the easement at its November meeting.

Spectra will pay the agency roughly $130,000 for the easement. The issue came in front of the board about four months ago, but the body tabled their decision until last month's meeting.

Lavarro concedes that Spectra has already won approval from a federal agency to build the pipeline, which will snake underneath parts of Bayonne, Jersey City and offshore Hoboken. But he said granting the energy company an easement is tantamount to ?making Spectra?s life easier.?

?If we?ve exhausted every measure ? and we have no options left to us, then I would certainly reconsider,? Lavarro said. ?Right now, we still have pending options before us.?

The Federal Energy Regulator Commission in May gave final approval to Spectra?s request to build roughly 15 miles of new pipeline in parts of Hudson County and New York. Jersey City officials have voraciously opposed the project, with Mayor Jerramiah Healy vowing to utilize every legal method at the city?s disposal to halt construction.

The pipeline will create myriad safety issues and discourage development in the city, Healy has said. Spectra counters that the project will be one of the safest in North America.

But in October, the federal agency declined to reconsider its earlier decision, leaving the city with only one option left: a lawsuit in federal district court. City officials have privately conceded that stopping the pipeline at this stage ? construction has already begun ? is a longshot.

JCRA chief Bon Antonicello said the agency is aware of the city?s opposition to the pipeline, but he notes that Spectra has already won the approval of a federal judge to seize properties like the JCRA's 14,808-square-foot parcel in Greenville Yards, a former industrial area on the city's southern tip.

?Obviously we don?t want to jeopardize the city?s case, but we should negotiate the best deal we possibly can because they?re going to proceed to take it,? Antonicello said, adding that Spectra?s original offer for the easement was around $12,000.

Spectra has already seized other properties in the city to build the pipeline, including land near the Liberty Humane Society animal shelter.

Antonicello noted that while Spectra ?took possession? of the JCRA-owned lot and have started construction on it, the property remains owned by the JCRA though it has ?no market value for the agency.?

Why the f#$k doesnt Spectra and the federal government take all this money being spent on endangering these urban areas and funnel it into green energy ?

Waterfront walkway linking Hoboken, Jersey City to close this weekend for Spectra pipeline construction

The Hudson River Waterfront Walkway that links Newport in Jersey City and the Hoboken Terminal will be closed for the construction of the Spectra Energy gas pipeline this weekend, the company has announced.

The walkway will be closed from Friday Nov. 30 at 8 p.m. to Monday, Dec. 3 at 5 a.m.

Spectra, which wants the pipeline completed by next November, has been using drilling equipment just to the south of the Hoboken Terminal to bore under the Hudson River from New Jersey to New York.

Spectra Energy will be providing a 24-hour shuttle bus service between Newport and the Hudson Terminal.

The shuttle will stop at two locations in Newport, one at the intersection of Washington Boulevard and Pavonia Avenue, in front of the PATH station; and Washington Boulevard and 14th Street.

Huge gas explosion damages 42 buildings, injures 18 people in Springfield, Mass.

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. ? More than 40 buildings were damaged in a natural gas explosion in Massachusetts that injured 18 people, building inspectors said today following a preliminary investigation.

A strip club was flattened and a day care center was heavily damaged in the massive explosion Friday night in Springfield, one of New England?s biggest cities.

No one was killed in the blast.

Investigators today were trying to determine what caused the explosion, which could be heard for miles, left a large hole in the ground where the multistory brick building housing Scores Gentleman?s Club once stood and scattered debris over several blocks.
