From Googleearth I am getting a max of about 11 ft above sea level with much Societal Hill below 6 ft. Irene was not a hurricane. She broke apart long before hitting us. The max surge was about 4 to 5 feet.

This storm is bad... I REALLY REALLY REALLY want to be wrong about it.. but the trends show otherwise. Unless Sandy takes a right turn, or the barometric pressure increases.. we are going to have one hell of a storm surge.

The barrier islands (Wildwood, Asbury Park, etc.) are already flooding.. and it's not high tide and the storm is still a long way off.

Oh yeah, Asbury Park, that famous barrier island.

NOAA is calling a 5' surge tomorrow at 8pm, and NYHOPS nearly 7. The latter has me and much of the HP area that's at ~11' with 2 feet of grace. Lord willing. What's screwed up is that the 9th & Brunswick area that floods bad isn't particularly low, I guess it just drains real bad.

Irene by the numbers..NOAA

http://www.noaa.gov/images/Hurricane% ... %20Factoids_V4_083111.pdf

Water Levels

NOAA monitored water level data throughout the storm from 63 tide level gauges from Florida to Maine and 15 U.S. gauges in the Caribbean.

Along North Carolina, surge values ranged from 1 foot at Wilmington to about 6.2 feet above predicted tide levels at Oregon Inlet Marina. This was the highest storm surge observation from Hurricane Irene.

Stations near the entrance to Chesapeake Bay recorded storm surge values between 4 and 5 feet above predicted tide levels.

Stations from New York City to Woods Hole, Mass., had max storm surge values between 3 and 5 feet above predicted tide levels, with the highest preliminary measurement of 4.77 ft. recorded at Providence, R.I.

*** ****

MDM? Society Hill was fine during Irene. It is around 16 feet above sea level. At high tide the next morning the water did make it to about 3 inches over the Newark Bay Walkway. The entire Walkway was underwater .. it just disappeared. Also had some very minor wind damage to a few buildings.

My friends told me for Irene residents were also told to leave but not just the first floor the cops wanted everyone to leave? second and third floors. Their reasoning was that if SH was flooded they wouldn?t be able to get in to help anyone on the second or third floors. Most residents stayed.

If that photo is correct and the conditions hold... much of the area behind Washington St. in Hoboken will be flooded up to 5 ft.

Downtown JC and Newport are going to be fucked. That is showing 10ft+ (I am assuming that pick was taken at high tide) of surge. The storm hasn't even taken its left hand turn yet. Monday night is going to be interesting.

Not surprising.. that and Fish house road both flood out constantly... even during minor storms.

Right now, I think this is going to be the storm people who live in the low lying areas will be telling their grandchildren about.

Wind.. a lot.. but not killer..

rain.. we got worse during Irene.

Salt water in your living room.. yeah.. people in Society Hill, Newport, Downtown J.C., and Port Liberte are going to get fubared.

Arrrg! My Space Cadet of a tenant just called me. She had no idea they were closing down the subway at 7:00 pm. she is trapped in Brooklyn.

Now I have to get dressed to go out and feed her cat. She is lucky... I like cats.

The Office of Emergency Management is calling all Jersey City residents to evacuate and seek shelter at public schools in the area for locations in low lying areas including Greenville. Those with medical concerns are to seek shelter at PS #4 School on Bright St. which is near the J.C. Medical Center. Schools will be closed tomorrow and Tuesday, no collection of garbage or recycling, pets can be brought to the Vietnam Veterens Memorial building in Pershing Field Park, driving prohibited starting 2pm tomorrow afternoon. The Mayor's Action Bureau at city hall is now open for information and emergency calls. (201) 547-4900

I've been watching the Stevens surge graph as I've battened down the hatches in anticipation of saltwater in the streets, and it dropped the peak by 2 feet from this afternoon. It was peaking at 11.5. Lets hope it's accurate!

Maybe it's me, but I would feel a lot safer with Steve Fulop at the helm instead of a mayor who is more worried about his sons' bar flooding than he is with the welfare of the city. It's 7:59 on a Sunday night. What do you want to bet that the mayor and his wife are at the bar? He's stupid enough and arrogant enough to do that.

Watched a new forecast:

The storm is stronger than expected and the effects are coming in earlier than expected. The pressure is dropping even more than expected. Low pressure = a lot more surge.

The wind just picked up! I heard it and all windows are shut.. Took a peek outside and the trees are already swaying leaves flying all over the place. Sandy is definitely making her presence known.

I am saying anyone below the flood surge height should be concerned. Very concerned... For example, Hoboken was originally an island. Most of it is filled in river and swamp. I lived back on Jefferson st. back during the 1992 storm (which took out the PATH). At the height of the storm, a good portion of the street turned back into a river.

The surge is forecast to be much higher this time.

Flooding in wildwood. Not even raining!

The barrier islands areas are basically glorified sandbars. It doesn't take much of a surge to inundate them.

NOAA updated the storm path farther south. This drops rain totals for us under 5 inches, but ups the storm surge. They are 9 to 11 ft surge. A good part of Hoboken and a lot of the waterfront is less than 5 ft above sea level.

where are you seeing this?

Also, so are you saying that those that are more than 5ft above sea level may not see much flooding?

Downtown Jersey City is a weird setup. When Irene hit last year my building and street did not get flooded (Paulus Hook) but around the corner it was flooded that peoples basements were flooded. So it all depends where the dip goes. Just remember when Irene hit did your area get flooded - if so, then evacuate. If your building is higher ground, you should be safe but its up to you if you want to leave. With that said, thats the reason why Downtown Jersey City has a "VOLUNTARY EVACAUATION".

They want the people most in danger to fill up the shelters first. The rest of us may be trapped in our homes, but we won't drown.
