I have lived in the area for five years and have seen vast improvements in the lighting and number of people around the neighborhood. Steuben is much better lit than it used to be before 50 Columbus & Ivy House opened. Morgan is a bit darker at night and the old warehouses still get graffitied however even that has become better. The construction/renovations on Provost St. has helped too. I walk my dog at night and feel safe.

I love how getting your car stolen twice is the "only" problem.

super safe, but agree with someone who commented earlier, its a city, so know your surroundings. only thing that happened in my 3 years living on steuben is my car got stolen (twice). got it back both times.

yeah, I live here also and always walk the dog at night. Steuben is well lighted. Only thing that ever happened in my 2.5 years here is that my iPod was stolen out of my car, the window smashed, when I left it parked on warren by those empty lots over the weekend. that was pretty much my own dumb fault, as I left it in plain view. Also, that happened to be a part of that random spree where some guys stole a pickup and went around smashing car windows and stealing stuff downtown, so it was kind of a freak thing.

Isn't The Warehouse coffee shop a block away on Bay & Provost streets ? That should provide some comfort when walking around. Still that area seems under developed which could attract loners lurking about. Just keep an eye out there and yes leave your headphones at home.

We walk the dog late at night and have never been nervous in the area. The parking lots are well lit and 50 Columbus has 24-hour garage with an attendant sitting in that booth on Christopher Columbus side.

I would rate that area a 9 out of 10 in terms of safety...Jersey City has it's fair share of crime, but that area is pretty safe. Always mind your surroundings though as a general tip.

its pretty safe, but it is a city so always watch your back, and if your walking very late at night don't wear headphones, keep your guard up.

I am moving to JC from out of town and was hoping to get some info about whether it's safe to walk around on Steuben and Morgan streets after dark. Are all those empty lots an issue, or is the walk from the PATH safe even late at night? (BTW, I'm a woman in my late 20s.) Thanks!
