You could also ask the manager what happened the next time you shop at BJS

You have to renew. It isn't a permanent thing. This seems like the most logical reason for the change.

If you follow the links I posted above...

The first shows that in Jersey City, membership dues are not eligible for the reduced tax rate.

The second link shows that as of Oct 1, 2006, membership dues are taxed in the state of NJ.

Speaking from my own experience, sometimes it's often a paperwork failure. Someone responsible misses a deadline and they have to re-file. This happened at the store I work at a few years ago, and we had to charge 7% for a week or so until the paperwork went back through.

In short - there are a number of requirements that allow your business to obtain the 3.5% sales tax - hiring X number of people from the local community, given diversity statistics, etc.

If you dont meet those requirements - you dont get it.

It's not unusual for large box retailers to not get the benefit - it's really intended to smaller local enterprise. Verizon in the mall doesn't have the 3.5% sales tax either.

I renewed my membership and when I looked at the receipt there's a 7% sales tax charge on it. Is this new? I thought sales tax at shoprite, Bj's & Newport was 3.5%. Also is there a tax on renewing the membership?
