Many NPR affiliates carry 24 hour BBC streams on their second or third "channel". I'm listening to it right now on Vermont Public Radio.

Screw WNYC/NPR. All of you leftist political zombies obviously have swallowed so much of your own crap you can't tell biased reporting if it sits on your face, as long as it's biased towards the left. It's the MOST BIASED news coverage I've ever heard in my LIFE, it's worse than the New York Times! All of you are sitting here scratching your heads, it's amazing you're all so brainwashed that you can't tell. If you're going to use federal money to spread the agenda of one political party you /should/ get cut.
They have a few saving graces, like Radio Lab and This American Life, and so far as either don't try to stray into politics are great, but you can get those as a podcast. I've come to find that the only real source of unbiased American news is the BBC. I wish they'd shut down NPR and replace it with the BBC World Service.

I am a dues paying member of not only WNYC, but also our own WFMU, WFUV (Fordham), WBGO (Newark, Jazz 88.3), WKCR (Columbia University), WBAI (Pacifica Network) and WWOZ in New Orleans. I don't think we should play one station against another, and even though I disagree with some of the programming changes at WNYC, and their expense to produce, there are programs that they originate for ALL of NPR such as On The Media, Studio 360 and other gems such as Brian Lehrer and Leonard Lopate, imo, the two best programs covering news topics internationally to locally and then Lopate's cultural show that covers it all from news worthy to historical to all the arts in intelligent consideration not matched by any other station. WBAI is great with Bob Fass and other programs that are political such as Amy Goodman, my JC friend, Steve Rendall, senior analyst at FAIR, Gary Null and more but not a reason to stop federal funding of the aforementioned NPR/PRI/Pacifica programs that would not be produced if these Federal monies were not available, or would cut the production values on these programs if monies were lost. After 84 Years, WNYC Cuts a Cord With the City as It Moves [...]When all the costs are added up, and the price of new programming is tossed in, the bill comes to $61.3 million. That is on top of the regular operating budget: $38 million this year. Plus, rent must now be paid; the Municipal Building space came rent-free. So add a couple of million more to the total.[...] Support who you choose but don't play one against the other. We need them all

Here, here!
I love WNYC, you can't go wrong with Lenny Lopet, Radio Lab, BBC World News, Brian Lehrer, This American Life, Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, Terri Gross, Talk Of The Nation (when Ray Suarez was on before jackhole killed it), Morning Edition, etc. Consistently rated the most factually correct reporting.

Agreed. I do suspect that WNYC is relatively flush with cash. I love WBAI... great station to support financially.

I am a huge fan and supporter of public radio and would hate to see anything reduce its presence. However, WNYC is a bad example to hold up with regard to funding needs. There are thousands of stations that literally limp from year to year on what they manage to raise from their pledge drives. WNYC is not one of them, evident by the recent move into rather posh new headquarters at a cost of $61 million.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/06/nyregion/06nyc.html Personally, I give my money to WBAI and several smaller NPR/PRI/Pacifica affiliates.

I listen to WNYC every day; I get great reception on 93.9 FM. WNYC recently bought longtime classical music station WQXR, which is 105.9 FM. I listen to many many many hours of both stations a week.
Shows like the Brian Lehrer show (10 a.m., M-F), cover Jersey City not infrequently.

I listen to WNYC but federal money only covers somethng like 1% of the NPR budget. It's pretty much nothing so I'm not sure why losing 1% would impact them that much. If they can fully quantify what they'd be losing, then I'd be more apt to be supportive.

Thanks for letting us know about this, Bright. I love WNYC.
It took all of 60 seconds to send the letter Bright mentioned. I encourage all listeners to do the same. And if you don't listen to WNYC, it's 820am. Try it!

This is what the letter looks like. It will help New Jersey stations too.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Message sent to the following recipients: Representative Sires Senator Lautenberg Senator Menendez Message text follows: February 16, 2011 [recipient address was inserted here] Dear [recipient name was inserted here], I urge you to oppose any efforts to cut or eliminate funding for public broadcasting. My local public television and radio stations are critically important to me and to the 170 million Americans who access public broadcasting services each month. The small cost per person - annually $1.35 per citizen - is far outweighed by the benefits we all get from having a strong public broadcasting system to address our local community needs and provide services unmet elsewhere. Public broadcasting is one of the most successful public/private partnerships in America, with $6 in local support matching every $1 invested by the federal government. Cutting off federal dollars would have a cascade effect that would be catastrophic to the millions of people like me who use public broadcasting every day. There are more than 1,000 local public television and radio stations in America, representing some of the last locally-owned, locally-staffed and locally-programmed media outlets in this country. These stations are in every community across the country and employ some 21,000 people. Public broadcasting is an essential service to the American people, not a luxury as some contend. Without public broadcasting, our communities would lose access to the safe-haven of children's non-commercial educational content, the in-depth news and public affairs programming, access to the world of arts and cultural locally, nationally and internationally, and the local voice that weaves the diverse perspectives of our communities together. In addition to the unparalleled programming offered by local public broadcasters, local stations are maximizing digital technology and their universal reach to provide critical resources to local communities. For example, public radio stations provide reading services for the blind, public television stations partner with state and local departments of education to provide teachers with on-line educational resources aligned with state standards, and both television and radio stations provide critical and targeted emergency communications in the wake of a disaster. Without federal funding, these critical resources will disappear, disenfranchising millions of Americans who depend on these services. The minimal federal investment in public broadcasting stations ensures free and universal access to a wide array of high quality, educational, non-commercial content and services. These services are too valuable to lose. As a constituent who highly values the programming and services of my local public broadcasters, I urge you to oppose any efforts to cut funding for public broadcasting. Sincerely,

Within days, Congress will vote on legislation that could cut 100% of funding for public broadcasting, which includes $3 million to fund programming operations for New York Public Radio (WNYC and WQXR), plus an additional $1.25 million for innovative, original programming. These proposed cuts threaten WNYC and public broadcasting as a whole.
170 million Americans rely on public radio and public television for trusted news and perspective and programming that brings the arts to everyone ? for a minimal investment of $1.35 per U.S. citizen per year. You can make a difference ? contact your representatives in Congress to let them know how you feel about federal funding for the independent journalism, thought-provoking news, conversations and cultural programs you hear on WNYC. I encourage you to take action now to let Congress know what public radio means to you. * Click here[ to send a pre-written (and editable) e-mail. * Or call your representative in Congress at (202) 224-3121. Your support for public radio helps our democracy thrive. Your voice now can make a critical difference. Sincerely, Laura R. Walker President & CEO, New York Public Radio
