Interesting thing is, there was a massive rebuild of much of I-78 just west of that point a few years ago. This project seems to be centered around the massive new ramps connecting the Garden State Parkway to 78. And that's been overdue for a long, long time...always found it ridiculous that there was no way to get from the GSP northbound to 78 West without first going east and then making a U-Turn at Hillside.

I totally invented the "Straddle Bus" when I was about 10 years old. Then I lost interest and forgot about it. If I'd had the funding or the ability, we'd all be using them today.

It astonishing that they would issue simultaneous permits to close down lanes on BOTH the main south/west conduits out of JC. But we've seen this before, like closing 2 of the 3 roads connecting downtown to Hoboken.

I didn't know I95 wasn't a major highway from 15 E.

in an effort to be helpful, as opposed to spewing rhetoric which may or may not be correct (depending on which economic school of thought one subscribes to), you can find out the real reason here:

http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2010 ... pected_along_i-78e_d.html

or

http://www.thealternativepress.com/article.asp?news=14290

the traffic has been horrendous since this construction started. other than to commiserate at the current situation, there's not so much we can do (i have started working from home in the morning to compensate -- but i have to leave before 9 a.m. to skip the pulaski construction!) -- and hope that the future traffic pattern is beneficial.

you could also take 280. or go through hoboken. or tonnelle. except they are not so convenient, i agree.

They are doing this to artificially create work to spend stimulus money.

So, a few basic questions...

1) What exactly are they doing to 78?

2) What is the schedule of when they work/shut down the right hand lane?

3) When is this going to be done?

It's bad enough that we live in a city of 250,000 with only ONE major highway leading into and out of it, so needless to say it's a big hassle to have that one highway constantly under construction.
