Wow, if that were true, then all those DC lobbyists would be out of jobs!

So does this mean that Sterling can vote on 5/20?

My apologies, I understand that it is Waterman and Valentin who allegedly can't vote on the contract. Apparently Christie/Schundler are saying that because they received the endorsement of the teacher's union, that they must recuse themselves from the vote. This would deprive the board of the five votes needed to ratify the contract.
The bully from Trenton continues to screw Jersey city.

What exactly is the argument for why Waterman and Lester cannot vote to ratify the new contract?

The meeting this Thursday will be packed with teachers to support our new Board members as they vote to finally settle the teachers contract.

Thanks harry526 for the detailed reply.
It seems that Gov Christie and our Commissioner of Ed are making threats against our newly elected school board members that they may find a lawsuit brought against them for just reasons. It seems that corruption is not just in Hudson County and Jersey City but also at the State level as well.

What happened you ask........
The Board of Education met to vote on the contract for Jersey City Teachers....A pact that was negotiated and approved by Dr. Epps and a state appointed mediator. ? The pact was recommended by a mediator, a neutral third party. The mediator made it clear in his report that both the union and the district had to ?give? to create a reasonable settlement. ? The salary increases in the contract are prudent, and in line with the settlements in other school districts. ? More teachers retired at the end of last school year than were hired in this school year. That fact alone produces a multi-million dollar savings for the Board of Education. ? The contract creates immediate savings by ending the perfect attendance bonus. ? A health insurance opt out provision could create substantial savings in health insurance premium costs for the district, but only if the contract is ratified by the Board. ? The contract contains provisions that reduce prescription drug costs for the Board, but only if the contract is ratified by the Board. ? The tentative contract settles the outstanding issues of the move from the State Health Benefit Plan (with a Traditional Plan component) to the School Employees Health Benefit Plan (without a Traditional Plan component). All told a contract that is fair and saves the district millions of dollars. At this meeting the BOE voted to table the vote on the contract until the next meeting on May 20th at PS #11 at 6:00 PM. This motion was made by Ms. Sebron, seconded by Ms. Thompson, and passed by a 5-4 margin with Mr. Connors, Mr. Waterman, and Ms. Lester joining Ms. Sebron and Ms. Thompson. It was tabled due to threats made by the Gov. and Commish of ED. against the newly elected members of the BOE. These threats are disenfranchising the voters of Jersey City, as well as compromising the constitutional rights of those elected to serve.

What happened is fear tactics are being employed by corrupt career politicians in order to try to paralyze the new free thinking board members.

90013th,
Very good question! In my very short time on the Board, I realize that this group is fractured and many don't do in public what they say in private. I was made to understand and thought, naively, that a greater majority would table the matter in attempt to gain more time to decide. There are really many factors that need to be considered such as the possibility of a lawsuit and my own expulsion from the Board, the loss of local control by the Board as a whole and the threat of more state aid cuts next year in the form of millions of dollars. I learned a valuable lesson last night and I am positive it won't be my last. What I am more positive about is that next time, I will be better prepared. Transparency, here we come! Sterling

Thank you Mr. Waterman. It does appear you wanted to vote last night. Could you give us any further information about what happened and why exactly the vote was tabled?

TONIGHT @ 6PM! My friend said: I just want to emphasize that TONIGHT is the Special Meeting to Vote on the Teacher?s Contract at the Board of Ed building, room 810. They scheduled this urgently & at the last minute hoping it will fly under the radar. [...] The public can attend and speak during these meetings if you want to be heard and you don?t have to book talk time. WE NEED PEOPLE THERE AT THESE MEETINGS and you don?t have to stay long but we need to demonstrate that people are holding the Board Members and Epps accountable -Especially at next week?s Board of Ed Meeting. Please come out if you can. Cheers, Gina

Sterling has been very busy with discussing many issues with parents, teachers, children, and the many volunteers who campaigned on his behalf and our other board members we helped to elect. You will know how he votes on Epps contract or the search for someone to fill this position when it happens. Sterling and the other board members have no obligation to be on this board and as busy as they are focusing on real issues, their time is best spent speaking with those who really care about our school and it's children. If you really cared you'd come to the board mtgs instead of lurking on this board.

by stepanstas on 2010/5/12 11:05:20 Good thing Sterling checks in once in a while AFTER the election. This way we know how he will vote and what he thinks of the contract. Get your torches and pitchforks, boys! It's time for some good ole knee-jerk outrage! Bring all your snark, but make sure you leave the evidence at home, okay?

Note that the vote on the teacher's contract will be occurring tomorrow night at 6 - the same time as the city council meeting. The Board of Ed budget is ~ $620 million - more than $100 million larger than the city's budget and yet very few people attend these meetings and less than 10% of the city's registered voters participate in the BoE elections.
