That story sounded like bullshit from the beginning. A young child may not know better but a 14 year old definitely would realize the consequences of changing a car from drive to reverse without telling the driver! I'd be pissed if my mom tried to put the blame on me for her being a wreckless and irresponsible driver. They are ridiculously lucky.

Is this still the cause for delay for the WTC path? I heard the announcement say there was an obstruction on the track so it would be delayed by 20 minutes last night.

Now it all makes sense.

Did she lie to police then?

Wonder who's gonna take care of the medical bill.

Even better a local news station interviewed a young guy that witnessed the accident. He is the one who called 911. He said the car came down the street and attempted to park. The driver while parking hit a car behind her with such force that it dented it and pushed it onto the bumper of the car behind it. The witness said he feels the driver then panicked and stepped on the gas trying to flee the scene. Guess she fled the wrong way.

This sounds a lot more plausible. I mean why would her daughter suddenly "put the car into drive"?

"she thought her 1998 Plymouth was in reverse, unaware that her daughter had grabbed the gear shift and put the car into drive"

So the woman hits the gas, and the moron can't tell the difference between going forward or backward?

She deserves to be Darwin'd off the planet. And she certainly shouldn't be breeding, perpetuating a strain of faulty genes.

This is an amazing story, the fact that they lived, the fact that they are relatively unharmed! If you don?t live in the area you may not fully appreciate the topography of that particular Cliffside. The story is not exaggerating, the portion of land the car went ovdr really is a rocky vertical cliff.

Jersey City mom, daughter escape serious injury as car plunges 50 feet, flips on PATH tracks

Thursday, March 11, 2010
By GEM JEFFERSON
JOURNAL STAFF WRITER

A Jersey City woman and her daughter miraculously avoided serious injury - and even death - when their car plunged off a 50-foot cliff yesterday morning and landed on PATH tracks.

The driver, 38, and her daughter, 14, suffered only some bumps and bruises, but were kept overnight at the Jersey City Medical Center for observation, a hospital spokesman said.

A person close to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey said a video of the incident showed a train passed just moments before the car fell from the foot of Cottage Street, a dead-end near Tonnelle and Newark avenues, west of Kennedy Boulevard.

Port Authority officials would not confirm the close call. The accident halted PATH service between Newark Penn Station and the World Trade Center for three hours. The accident happened at around 7:30 a.m.

The driver, a Cottage Street resident, told police that she thought her 1998 Plymouth was in reverse, unaware that her daughter had grabbed the gear shift and put the car into drive.

The driver lost control of the car when she accelerated and went through some brush and through a fence before falling 50 feet and flipping on the tracks, the police report said.

For those who aren't familiar with where Cottage Street ends at the PATH tracks west of The Boulevard, this WPIX 11 News Video gives a clearer view of Cottage and the fence.

Cottage St. is a dead end with an old chain link fence at the end of it. Hey maybe it was a Toyota. (can't tell from the picture)

Sounds like a distraction or new to driving a car.
