well, i got so hungry from this thread, that I had to pick up the other day. I went to rowenas on west side ave...a favorite among my friends but by the time I got there (4pm) everything was gone. The pancit bihon (rice noodles) was really good though. I, then, went to Fiesta Grill which was bringing out food. Still no kare-kare which is what I want to eat. I guess I will just have to cook it.

Fiesta Grill and Casa Manila on Newark Avenue are good. Also on West Side Ave., I recommend Rowena's. I love their fresh lumpia (spring roll) with peanut sauce!

Fiesta Grill on Westside Ave. is on par with just about all of the turo-turo in the area, with the added bonus of parking across the street. Unlike most other Filipino restaurants, they also encourage you to BYO, so you can wash down your lechon kawali with San Mig beer.
I think the one on Newark with the same name (and owner)has a better selection. The food at the Philippine Bread House is always consistent, they have all the basics, plus fresh pan-de-sal. The aroma in the PBH is heaven. You can then have halo-halo at the Little Quiapo inside the parking lot. Fil-Am Food Mart (also on Newark ave, off JFK) also serves good lunch and you can pick up Tiger Prawns to cook at home.

Yes, Casa Manila is on Newark Avenue. Its a good place to sit and eat with friends. But its still a buffet style. If you can make it to Montgomery and West Side Avenue, Fiesta Grill is larger and can seat many people. I think they have ballroom dancing on sundays with DI (dance instructors).
But I still jump from restaurant to restaurant in JSQ to compare buffet selections then I go back to the one that has the best selection that day. Not sure why the Filipino restaurants do not deliver. It could be the menu selections are not offered regularly or run out. Or like me, I like to see the food selection first. Should I start a delivery service for these restaurants? I'd eat all the food before I would deliver it. I hear legal grounds sells the BBQ sticks from another neighbor. btw does anyone go to el supremo? do they sill sell ox tail in its entirety?

I think that joint went out of business because it took over the Roy's Buena Vista Italian restaurant. I was passing by wondering how the post Roy's place was doing and it has an appearance of being defunct.

there is one on mallory near clendenny, i just can't remember the name of it at the moment.
if you're adventurous and feel like attempting your own, the 555 asian supermarket on tonnele ave going south has pretty much anything you can think of. i buy frozen lumpia there :)

fiesta grill delivers? there are 2 fiesta grills, the small one on Newark Avenue and the large ballroom one on West Side Ave/Montgomery.For out of towners, I take them to the one on West Side Ave. You can order family style...I usually pre-order before I arrive.
Casa Manila - is ok] Red Ribbon is famous for its mango cake and has long lines on the weekend. Whats the name of the restaurant diagnal from Red Ribbon on Newark Ave? They have a large selection of foods. Dishes I look for at any of these restaurants are the BBQ sticks for the kids, ox tail in peanutbutter sauce called Kare-Kare, Beef in simmered in tomato/pepper/potatoes, and pancit - rice noodles. Oh and lumpia, small egg rolls. I heard there's a new filipino stand on Newark/Merseles - Legal Grounds? Coffee and filipino food? But I haven't been there. Now I am so hungry....

All the Filipino restaurants in JC are turo-turo (or fast food) and none are cooked to order. Of these, I like Casa Manila on Newark Ave and Fiesta Grill on Westside.
For dessert or pastries, you may also want to take your friends to the Philippine Breadhouse on Newark Ave or Red Ribbon further west on Newark. You're welcome.

I live in the Heights, and pass a lot of restaurants with Philippine food on my way to Journal Square. Can anyone recommend one? My Filipino friends in NYC want to go, and I would love to impress them! Thanks.
