We need an independant audit on all and every cityhall department to see where the money is going - not just invoices, but visual proof on the expenditure.
We have ass wipes in charge of departments that have never run a business successfully.

Couild it be the breaks are by design and meant to happen to keep the contractors busy? Not unheard of and I remember a large pipe being placed underground a few years back along Grand near Henderson toward Paulus Hook that was'nt connected to anything at either end. On the news yesterday a city worker said it would cost up to three mil to replace it (more like 6 mil). So...

Lots of old ash in the soil in this area. (old train yard) Combine that with a low near the water location and the constant vibration of trains, light rail and traffic. Seems like an engineering problem on the surface. Don't know if it is true but someone told me these pipes are only a couple of decades old.....hmmm just a thought....could faulty engineering/construction problems just be coming back to bite the city on the ass?

UPDATE

2,000 Downtown Jersey City customers suffer through another water main break
By Ron Zeitlinger/The Jersey Journal
February 03, 2010, 12:30PM

Washington Boulevard between 14th and 18th streets is closed this morning because of a water main break.
Roughly 2,000 United Water customers in Downtown Jersey City are without water or have low water pressure today after a water main on Washington Boulevard near 14th Street ruptured last night.

United Water crews are working on repairing the main and expected to be finished by this afternoon, United Water spokeswoman Kara Kennedy said. The water company started receiving complaints from residents about 10:30 last night. A crew located the problematic main and began work on it at about 1:30 this morning.

Washington Boulevard is closed between 14th and 18th streets because of the repair work. Last week a water main ruptured in the same area. Kennedy said it could not be determined yet if the two are related.

In many of the highrise buildings in the area, residents above the fifth floor have very low pressure or no water at all, Kennedy said.

When water pressure is restored there will be no need to boil the water, she added.

Isnt that area contaminated by chrominum. Of course its gonna sink sooner or later & cause the pipes to move & break.

MYFOXNY.COM - Residents in the Newport section of Jersey City are waking up to low water pressure or no water service.

United Water company says a 30-inch water main ruptured overnight under Washington Boulevard and 14th Street.

People living above the fifth floor likely will not have water service.

It's not clear when the problem will be fixed.

This is the third time a water main has ruptured in the last several weeks in the Newport area of Jersey City.

MyFoxNY.com is updating this story.

I hate this town! I can't think of another location in the NYC area that constantly loses its water service 2 to 3 times a year like we do.

Jersey City's Newport section suffers another water-main break
By The Associated Press
February 03, 2010, 4:58AM

JERSEY CITY -- A water main broke, flooding streets and affecting thousands of residents in nearby apartment buildings.

The break was reported early today in the city's Newport section in an area full of high-rise buildings.

Jersey City communications director Stan Eason said thousands of people live in the downtown area and those on or above the fifth floors of their buildings will experience no or low water pressure. He said this water main break is similar to the rupture of a 35-inch-wide pipe a week ago and is in the same location.

No one has been injured. The cause of the break hasn't been determined.

The rupture of a pipe early last month in another part of the city temporarily closed a state highway and affected the water supply to neighboring Bayonne.
