just accept the fact that this is going to happen when your business downtown, and you have no private parking. especially with your location.......have you seen who hangs out downtown at night?

For what it's worth, I have seen evidence of smashed windows in three separate places on Columbus between Grove & Jersey in the past two weeks.
While business owners are vested partners, I don't consider it their responsibilities to ensure safety or prevent theft. Actually, I think the biggest deterant is foot traffic and having businesses that stay open late. That's why it is so unfortunate that this happened right outside this awesome business- and to a patron no less. It's so rare that I see a police presence downtown. That would help.

oh Celeste that sucks!
but know that your place is welcoming enough that most of us will brave the @ssholes to get there. and yeah, a cc camera would be a great addition to that block.

I also had a window smashed it was parked right smack in the middle in front of Mosquito Park on Kennedy Blvd. Up in the Heights, it happened about 10 years ago. I found a brick in the back seat of me car. The land area in the park is high up and slopes down to where the edge meets the fence and the sidewalk. It was dark out when I got home I figure the guy that did it was sitting on a bench perched high and away from the people passing by on the sidewalk and the cars had the green light traveling on Kennedy so it is hard for anyone see him especially with those lions and bears blocking part of the view. He probably threw the brick from a far to create an entry then waited a while to make sure the coast was clear then went in for the kill. I had nothing of value in there all he took was the map light and broke the lock to the glove compartment, I always take all 3 credentials with me when exiting the vehicle.

The fact is this type of stuff happens quite frequently Celeste. On Saturday nite my neighbor's car was hit at Barrow & York. Maybe the same baddie. Vent it in a strong letter to the Mayor's office with a copy to the brass at the PD. Keep calling them out on this and rock their boat. Keep up the good work.

Oh, I'm so sorry this happened. I assume these were out-of-towners who might now be afraid to come back to JC. This happened to me when I lived in North Bergen-- once my windshield, once my side mirror. Right outside my building.
I don't know what to suggest, except maybe to put a security camera outside. That way if it happens again, you can give something to the police. Incidents like this are unfortunate because they can scare people away from your warm and wonderful business.

yeah. Post on JClist. ha!
Where are these people from that they are afraid to come back because of a smashed window? Windows get smashed in ritzy suburbs. How did you guys not notice a window being smashed in front of the store? Keep a baseball bat handy and the next person that smashes a window, go out there and smash them.

ok folks.... what is this about? we had a live music event on friday nite jan 29. it was a bitter cold evening and the rum runners were doing their very best to play to a very small audience of 6! my last customers left after the band packed up, and found that their vehicle window was smashed! now they love my place but are too afraid to return!
it is hard enough to try running a small biz without petty crime threatens my customers! any suggestions?
