They would have shot him if he hadn't been wrestling with a cop. I wouldn't blame them if they had.

Get real, they(jcpd) would have had 100% justification in doing so. Put yrself in their shoes your walking into a violent situation and someone puts the barrel of a gun in yr face, theres no court in this country that would vote in favor of the perp! Thats one lucky ass dude!!

Now that guy is going to jail. If the statement he gave about not having anything to live for remains, he may be in crisis there. The majority of suicides in jail are in the first 48 hours and are well above national averages. Also in the first year after release from prison. We need to focus our resources on developing different kinds of facilities so there is more hope.
Good thing he didn't seem to intend to hurt anyone else.

No, they shouldn't have, but that's what he wanted. Then there would have been a huge lawsuit against the city, and other beaureacratic bullshit.
They did the right thing.

Kudos JCPD. An obvious "suicide by cop" attempt.

Cops wrestle air rifle from Jersey City Heights man who 'wanted to die,' police say
By Michaelangelo Conte/The Jersey Journal December 28, 2009, 6:09PM air-rifle-jersey-city-cops.jpgGoogle MapsJersey City police say they wrestled what turned out to be an air rifle from a man inside a home on Kennedy Boulevard near Lincoln Street in the city's Heights section yesterday afternoon.Jersey City police wrestled what turned out to be an air rifle from a man who told them he approached them with the weapon Sunday afternoon because he had nothing to live for, officials said. The 39-year-old resident of Kennedy Boulevard, near Lincoln Street, was arrested Sunday at 1:24 p.m. and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, resisting arrest, weapons offenses, and using false ID, reports said. Police responded to the home on a report of a man with a rifle and when they entered he approached an officer with the air rifle hidden behind his back, reports said. When the officer ordered him to show his hands, the man swung the barrel toward the cop's chin, reports said. The officer grabbed the BB gun rifle and managed to strike the man with its stock, causing him to loosen his grip, reports said. The officer was able to force the man to the ground and cuff him and it was then that the officers realized it was not a real rifle, reports said. The man's girlfriend said he was drunk. While being processed, the man told police he came at the officers with the air rifle because "he had nothing to live for and wanted to die," reports said. He was taken to the Jersey City Medical Center to be physically and mentally evaluated, reports said.
