It's just passing the Colgate clock - pretty big procession. Very neat.

Jersey City awaits USS New York
By Melissa Hayes/The Jersey Journal November 02, 2009, 7:24AM The USS New York sails down the Mississippi River through the Port of New Orleans in New Orleans, La., on Oct. 13, 2009. Jersey City officials will celebrate the commissioning of the ship today as it trudges into New York Harbor. Firefighters, police and EMTs are gathered at Exchange Place awaiting the arrival of the USS New York. Despite a light rain failing, over 100 people have gathered to salute the ship. The Navy ship, which will be commissioned later this week, was crafted with steel from the World Trade Center wreckage. It was given the name "New York" to pay tribute to the victims and survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The ship is expected to pass by Jersey City on it's way to dock in New York around 8 a.m. There will be a 21-gun salute at that time. Look for Jersey City native Don Wilson, a Navy information systems officer aboard the ship, waving to his hometown from the deck as the ship passes by. ======== 9/11 ship sails up Hudson today Monday, November 02, 2009 By MELISSA HAYES JOURNAL STAFF WRITER Paying tribute to the victims and survivors of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, a Navy ship partially crafted with steel from the World Trade Center wreckage will make its way up the Hudson River today. Jersey City's elected officials, along with police officers and firefighters will gather at Exchange Place to celebrate the commissioning of the USS New York, which will enter the Navy's fleet Friday. It is expected to have an active lifespan of some 40 years. The new ship, built at a cost of $1.3 billion, weighs in at 25,000 tons. Just 7.5 tons of that is steel salvaged from the World Trade Center, all of it in the bow, the front of the ship. "USS New York, fittingly named, symbolizes the strength and resilience of the American people," Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah T. Healy said in a statement. "As it sails across the waters, it will serve as a reminder of the true spirit of our community. "On that tragic day, there was an outpouring of support and patriotism," Healy added, from thousands of first responders and regular residents. The Jersey City waterfront was a central staging area for the rescue and recovery efforts in the hours and days after the attack. The Jersey City Fire Department's fireboat, the Joseph Lovero, will escort the USS New York as it docks in New York. The fireboat is named for a city fire dispatcher who rushed to the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001 and was killed by falling debris, The ship will stop at the World Trade Center site at 8 a.m. for a 21-gun salute. The motto of the 684-foot-long ship, also known as LPD-21, is "Strength forged through sacrifice. Never forget."

Jersey City police using new alert system
By Melissa Hayes/The Jersey Journal October 29, 2009, 4:04PM If you hear gunshots early Monday morning don't be alarmed. The Jersey City Police Department wants to let residents know there will be a 21-gun salute in honor of the USS New York's visit to the World Trade Center site Monday morning around 8 a.m. The police department used a new electronic messaging system to alert residents who have subscribed to either receive e-mails or cell phone text messages. The police department has also used the service to send out safe trick-or-treating tips for Halloween on Saturday. Residents interested in receiving the messages can sign up on the department's Web site. http://www.nixle.com/
