At this rate, Fulop is the only elected official who will be left on the council.

Jimmy King, Harvey Smith arrested in FBI sweep of public officials
by The Jersey Journal
Thursday July 23, 2009, 10:52 AM

The list of Hudson County officials ensnared in the statewide corruption roundup just keeps growing.

The names of all the people arrested this morning will be released at a news conference in Newark at noon, but sources tell The Jersey Journal that former Jersey City Ward C City Council candidate Jimmy King is on the list King has filed a lawsuit to have Councilwoman Nidia Lopez removed from office.

Sources say the list also includes former Ward E City Council candidate Guy Catrillo, who lost to incumbent Steve Fulop in the May election. Catrillo, who ran on Mayor Jerramiah Healy's ticket, currently works in the Mayor's Action Bureau. Also on the list is L. Harvey Smith, the former state legislator who was defeated in the mayoral race in May, and LaVern Webb Washington, another city council candidate who ran lost in the May election.

Joe Cardwell, a political operative who has worked with state Sen. Sandra Bolden Cunningham, is also on the list that includes Ron Manzo, Lou Manzo's brother.

I have a feeling if they had something on him, he would be in the Fed building right now, unless Guy or someone else has more information and cuts a deal. They round up everyone they can at the same time so people can't cover their tracks.

i'd love to know at this very moment what our illustrious mayor is thinking. what i have not seen is any developers being arrested, which i would have expected, and not some punk-a$$ illegal organ donor scheme. come'on ... organ donors? that is like so 3rd world .....

if nobody turns on healy, which i doubt, he has some impressive clout that man. but if someone does, which given the integrity and the ethical behavior of the arrested pols is an objective fact, my god; we'll see a political massacre - self-implosion - here.

so i see dan levin or steve fulop for mayor after a special election ....

on a related note, the indictment of cammarano (sp?) is a lovely read

It sounds like what most of these people are connected with accepting campaign contributions illegally in excess of contribution limits and funneling it through other people, in which case the onus is on the campaign to insure the limits of any individual donor is not exceeded. If I had to guess, I would bet that contributors made greater contributions than they should have and then the campaigns attributed them to other people to keep the money, which would give the contributors plausible deniability.

The thing to remember about taking bribes, its all reportable income, so to avoid these pesky charges you better pay taxes on it.

N.J. officials, N.Y. rabbis caught in federal money laundering, corruption sweep
Posted by mdowling July 23, 2009 09:00AM
NEWARK -- A New Jersey assemblyman and the mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus were among public officials arrested this morning by FBI agents in an international money laundering and corruption probe that includes rabbis in the Syrian Jewish communities of Deal and Brooklyn.

Assemblyman Daniel Van Pelt (R-Ocean), Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano, Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell and Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega are among those already brought to the FBI building in Newark. Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini has also been arrested.

Robert Scrianno/The Star-LedgerHoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano is one of many people brought to FBI Headquarters in Newark after an being taken into custody early this morning.
A total of 30 people have been taken into custody, officials said.

The arrests are the result of a two-year FBI and IRS probe that began with an investigation of money transfers by members of the Syrian enclaves in Deal and Brooklyn. Those arrested this morning include key religious leaders in the tight-knit, wealthy communities.

The federal investigation then expanded into a public corruption probe.

No indictments have been released, though court appearances are expected later today in U.S. District Court in Newark. Nearly 20 people have already been led into the FBI building in Newark as the sweep continues to unfold in two states.

Agents also raided religious institutions to make arrests and collect information.

The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the IRS took out at least three boxes from the Deal Yeshiva, as students were arriving at school. The Deal Yeshiva, on the corner of Brighton and Norwood avenues, is a prestigious religious school in town.

Authorities also searched the Ohel Yaacob synagogue on Ocean Avenue in Deal and removed several boxes.

Assemblyman Van Pelt, 44, is also the mayor of Ocean Township, a post he has held since 1988. He holds degrees from The College of New Jersey (Criminal Justice) and Regent University (Public Policy and Government).

Cammarano, 32, was elected mayor of Hoboken in June. He was elected Hoboken City Councilman-at-Large in 2005. According to his campaign website, Cammarano is an attorney at the law firm of Genova, Burns, & Vernoia, which has offices in New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania.

Cammarano previously worked as a law clerk for Superior Court Judge Kevin Callahan in Jersey City. He is a member of the New Jersey State Bar Association and the Association of the Federal Bar of the State of New Jersey, as well as the bar associations for Hudson, Bergen and Essex Counties. He has also worked as an adjunct professor at Montclair State University.

Robery Scrianno/The Star-Ledger Dennis Elwell, mayor of Secaucus, is led to to FBI Headquarters in Newark after an being taken into custody early this morning.
Elwell, 64, has served for more than two decades as mayor and a member of the town council. Elwell and his council slate recently won victory in their contested Democratic June primary contests.

Elwell is the president of a family-owned trucking company. He is a former Secaucus Board of Education member and a decorated Vietnam combat veteran.

Why do they point out John Guarini's political affiliation? Or is it because he is the only Republican?

Many of them were getting paid off by builders. BIG shocker there.

Maybe we can't take the corrupt out in the elections, so I guess we'll have to let the feds take care of it for us. I am sure there are more surprises to come!

Dozens of arrests are taking place across New Jersey this morning and many public officials -- including the mayors of Hoboken and Secaucus, the deputy mayor of Jersey City -- are among those being taken into custody.

FBI and IRS agents are making the roundups all across the state in what is being described as one of the biggest investigations of its kind in Jersey's scandal-plagued history.

It appears to be a corruption related investigation but justice department and FBI spokesmen would not commenting on the details this morning.

Arrests and searches are underway across Jersey City, Secaucus and numerous Hudson and Bergen county locations.

In past years, New jersey has seen more than 100 corruption-related arrests of public officials. No word on the specific charges against those being rounded up today. A press conference is expected later today.

Among those arrested this morning were Jersey City Deputy Mayor Leona Beldini, Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano and Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell, authorities said. Several area rabbis and other community leaders including Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega were brought into custody in connection with this case, officials said.
