$70,000 worth of jewelry swiped at New Year's Eve party; victim says family member likely stole it

A 66-year-old Port Liberte resident in Jersey City told police yesterday that $70,000 worth of her jewelry was swiped during a New Year's Eve party with family members at her home, according to police reports.

The victim told police she wanted to ring in the New Year adorned with some of her priciest baubles.

So at dinner time, she placed two rings and a pair of earrings in a small blue Tiffany bag and left it in her purse in the living room for safe keeping, reports said.

But when the clock struck midnight, she reached into her purse and the bag of jewelry was gone, reports said.

Police said they plan to question the relatives at the party, mostly out-of-towners who were visiting from California.

Reported missing was a diamond ring worth $45,000, a second ring worth $15,000 and a pair of earrings valued at $10,000.

The reports did not say why the victim waited until Saturday to report the theft.
