Just CYA jargon. As the act was not completed, it's only an "attempt" -- and sometimes the intent has to be inferred. Same reason why some knucklehead who gets caught red-handed with loot is called the "alleged perpetrator."

The original post stated that the victim "screamed" and he "panicked and left the purse on the ground". This and the Police account lead me to believe it was only a robbery. JimA

Great Job that the police got this guy -- but what do they mean by "victim was able to get away from an actor who may have been trying to rob the victim."
No big deal and maybe I'm just being a little dense -- but do they mean it might have been a robbery as oppose to an attempted sex crime - or as oppose to something else altogether? I don't think it is clear. Quote:

One of my friends was woken by a woman's scream for help around 5:30am Monday. The neighbors called 911 and two police cars questioned the whitnesses and searched the neighborhood. The attack happened as the woman was about to get into her car on her way to work. She was able to fight him off and alert the neighbors, panicked he left her purse laying on the group. The cops said they were able to find and arrest the man who the woman later identified. Has anyone heard the official word on this? There was another attack on a woman December 27th at Varick and Mercer so I definitely want to encourage everyone to stay extra vigilant, especially when walking alone at night.
